Title: The Grim Legacy
Author: Polly Shulman
Format: Hardback
Page Count: 325
Grade Reading Level: Grade 7+

Summary: Her life changed when Elizabeth Rew chose to do a report on the Grimm Brothers. Soon Elizabeth will discover that magic is real and so are the fairytales the Grimm Brothers told. Once out of place in both home and at school, Elizabeth begins to feel like she belongs somewhere when her English teacher gets her an interview for the New York Circulating Material Library. Elizabeth loves the library and all the collections housed within. She is even making friends! Things get even better when she’s invited to begin working in the Grimm Collection… but all is not as it seems as the magical items seem to be losing their magic. Soon a new fairytale is being told as the kids take it up on themselves to figure out who is behind the magic drain and stolen artifacts.

Likes:

  • The New York Circulating Material Library. It sounds amazing. Built in 1745 with beautiful Tiffany glass windows depicting the four seasons with all sorts of neat collections. One can check out period clothes, or fondue sets, or shoes, or even items found in fairytales.
  • Elizabeth Rew is a great heroine. She’s likeable and her narrative is fun.
  • I particularly liked that the “prince” Marc Merritt winds up with the “princess” Anjali Rao, leaving Aaron Rosendorn for Elizabeth. Sure he starts off cranky and Anjali obsessed but that quickly changes once he gets to know Elizabeth.
  • The Grimm Collection: seven-league boots, mermaid's comb, and the wicked mirror from Snow White, the twelve pairs of slippers, and so on. Need I say anything more?
  • The hints about the other “special” collections like the Grimm Collection. I really see sequels to this story exploring the other collections and even the Grimm one again. Polly set up an amazing world. I want to visit it again and soon!
  • I really like Jaya Rao, Anjali’s younger sister. She was a cool kid and very handy with protection charms. I prefer her over her older sister.
  • The pneums! Especially the scene where the Elizabeth and Marc ride in them.

Last Minute Thoughts: A good book for a Harry Potter fan!
