Author: Melissa de la Cruz
Page Count: 352 pages
Grade Reading Level: Ages 16+
Summary: Schulyer and Jack have bonded and their brief honeymoon is coming to an end. Jack must face his twin Mimi in a blood trial, a trial he is preparing to lose. Schuyler must find the Gate of Promise. When Jack puts off facing Mimi a little longer to stay with Schuyler and help her search, the finds out there’s more consequences to their bonding than originally thought as Schuyler comes down with blood sickness. Now he must face Mimi and destroy her in order to save Schuyler.
Mimi and Oliver head to Egypt and just miss connecting with Schulyer and Jack. Mimi is looking for a way into hell to face down whatever she has to in order to retrieve Kingsley Martin, an ex-Silverblood Venator she loves. She’s prepared to sacrifice whatever she must – Oliver’s soul for Kingsley’s soul and freedom from the underworld. But when she arrives, Kingsley doesn’t seem to care that she’s come for him. Can she let him go?
The Charles/Allegra/Ben love triangle continues as more of the past is revealed to show what happened to Schuyler’s mom and where the destruction of the vampires’ society started.
Why I started this book:
I want to find out what happens to Schuyler and Jack! Nobody is important to me.
- I love that Jack decides to hold off going to face Mimi in order to spend more time with Schuyler. I think his priorities are straight!
- Mimi gives up her own soul instead of Oliver’s in exchange for Kingsley’s. Unfortunately this makes her “evil” and antagonistic again as she’s without love or memories of it.
- The blood sickness. I think I would have preferred pregnancy – I mean they aren’t supposed to get pregnant right? That’s why they have reincarnation and why Schuyler is so different/important.
- I am so over the Charles/Allegra/Ben love triangle. Can we just wrap this up?
