Why I started this book:

I was given a copy by the author.

Likes:

Ancona took a real issue (sexting) amongst teens today and plugged it successfully into his story without being pious (which would turn off kids) or flippant (which would turn off adults). He uses humor to keep things light, but points out the seriousness and consequences of participating in the act.
Lightman going shopping with the girls and finding out undercover isn’t always fun. Haha.
Pi going to the dance and playing it cool with Vera and her friends.

Dislikes:

I miss the opening from Case of Tangled Love where the characters are introduced in a stylized “Case File” summary like way. I thought that was very clever and quickly brought readers into the C.Y.A as if they were agents too.
Tollhouse is a good agent for the C.Y.A. but I’m concerned by his chameleon behavior. He caves easily to situations and suggestions to blend into the group. I hope one day he’ll join a group and change them for the better, because essentially he’s a good kid.

Last Minute Thoughts: You should read The Case of Tangled Love before starting The Sext Crime as they follow each other sequentially and The Sext Crime makes references periodically to The Case of Tangled Love. Can’t wait for round three!

Summary: Milton is back on the surface, but is having troubles maintaining the energy that keeps him together and in the present. A science experiment with a bug zapper gets him the energy he needs but also makes him jittery and edgy. He’s trying to figure out if Heck was a dream or a reality of the afterlife and is attempting to reach Damian, the bully who got him killed in the first place. Meanwhile Marlo has been transferred out of the first circle of Heck into the second known as Rapacia for all the girls and boys who like to steal. Speaking of stealing, Marlo desperately wants to please this metallic bunny and grab the Hopeless Diamonds as they’re being transferred. Can she do it? Should she do it?

Why I started this book:

I wanted to know what happened next to Milton!

Likes:

Instead of Nirvana its Mallvana – the perfect place for shoppers in the afterlife!
The Dante approach to Heck is well done.
It’s got a good balance of humor to gothic.

Toss Up:

Many witticisms reference pop culture but are bound make more sense to older readers than they do for younger readers. Some even went over my head.

Dislikes:

The Grabbit. Creepy bugger isn’t he? I don’t like his rhyming.
The beginning was exceptionally hard to get through and I’ve read the first book. I’m not sure exactly what made it difficult, but I kept putting it down until I finally got passed the opening and got to the meat of the story.

Summary: The afterlife isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. A bureaucratic error sends Milton down to Heck with his sister Marlo. There’s no way he deserves to be here – just look at his file – one measly little Post-It note saying he was duped by his kleptomaniac sister into stealing right before they died. But as Milton learns, it’s not your first impression that counts the most in the afterlife but your last.

Why I started this book:

They die in a marshmallow explosion! The humor of this book drew me in and I checked it out from the library.

Likes:

There is a lot of humor in the story from the infamous marshmallow explosion to acronym fun to a toad like principal named Bea Elsa Bubb and her three headed tiny canine.
Milton and Marlo’s sibling relationship – are they fighting each other or for each other? It’s typical but loving.
I like how it ends. I like that some characters were willing to sacrifice a chance of escape to ensure one got away. Surely that means they’re redeemable and/or redeemed right?
The bully reminds me a lot of Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter. Love it!

Dislikes:

Some of the world building didn’t sit right with me because it seemed like small infractions were being punished endlessly and I’m guessing that’s why Milton is down there to right these wrongs, but I don’t know for sure.
Also I think some references might be more for adults than younger readers when the author refers to certain famous dead people, but I could be wrong. I love that Nixon teaching ethics, but do kids know why it's so funny?

Summary: Alona Dare returns from the light, something Will Killian has never seen before, and he should know because he’s a ghost-talker, someone who can see and hear ghosts waiting to move on. Alona rejoins him as his spirit guide and helps Will with his ghostly interactions.

The two developed a bit of a relationship in the last novel, The Ghost and the Goth, sharing one steamy kiss, and both are a bit shy about it. Will has fantasized about Alona since 6^th grade, and the reality of it is, he likes her better now. Alona, who’d never have talked to such a social outcast while alive, is drawn more and more into the warmth and comfort of Will. She likes him but it’s something she’s not quite ready to admit, even if he kisses like a dream.

Then she finds out, barely two months since her passing, that her mother is throwing away all her most sentimental possessions and her father is expecting a new baby girl with his awful home-wrecking wife who she can’t stand. Everyone is moving on and she doesn’t like it! She turns to Will and is surprised when he rebuffs her and her request to set her parents straight. What is going on? Is he throwing her over for the living too?

Why I started this book:

I requested a copy from the publisher which I got.

Likes:

Will’s college situation. Last book he barely managed to graduate, but because he told his mom about his gift, he could stick around town instead of leaving. His mom wants him to get higher education, but you’ll see how well that works out.
The yummy makeout sessions between Will and Alona. Love them.
There are more ghost talkers and the one Will meets is pretty, which immediately sets Alona on edge. Their new fledgling romance takes a big hit and he’s completely clueless as to why until some ghosts tell him. Hehe.
Alona’s attempts to control her sass because it makes her fade from existence are funny as they’re done very very grudgingly.
The dual POV approach works very well in this book because Will and Alona spend a lot of the book on separate adventures with overlapping parts.

Dislikes:

The very bad thing Alona does by accident. I’m not a big fan of it myself. It's a little scary (as far as an idea goes) and as she can interact already with Will (the only living character who counts as far as I’m concerned *g*) it's not really needed. It does provide major drama and plot movement, but I’m not sure what it spells out for the next book in the series. Let’s just say I hope things return to how they were and don’t remain the same. (Is that allusive enough to whet your appetite? lol) Oh and I feel bad for the mother.

Determined to gain Will Killian’s help in getting to the bright white beaches of heaven, she haunts him until he caves... but his help comes with a price. Alona’s got to keep the other ghosts away from him and inadvertently steps into the role of his spirit guide.

Why I started this book:

I requested an ARC for Queen of the Dead because it sounded cute; not realizing it was a sequel at the time. As soon as I did, I went to the library and checked out book one, The Ghost and the Goth, so I would be up to speed.

Likes:

Alona and Will are stereotypical high school clique characters on the surface but dig a little deeper and you’ll find they are multilayered. Alona’s perfect life is not so perfect. Will’s goth tendencies are not what they seem.
Alona’s vanity and superficial comments are funny. Got to love a girl who’s still concerned about her appearances in the afterlife. She’s also very insightful and smart. I like how her feelings for Will change throughout the book when she begins to notice things about his appearance (good teeth, broad chest, strong biceps…
I like how ghosts are more substantial around ghost-talkers. It certainly makes the romance between Alona and Will easier and super sexy. I always wondered how a ghost and a human would interact in a ghost romance. Love it.

Toss-Up:

I’m not sure how I feel about the chapters alternating between Alona and Will. I tend to like my narratives to be a little more cohesive than that, but overall I was appreciative of how easy it was to find out what characters were thinking in different situations.

Dislikes:

Alona’s mother’s inability to act like a grownup or a parent, and her father’s inability to stick up for his daughter to get her out of a situation where she has to act like the mom to an alcoholic because it would go against his second wife’s wishes and make his life more difficult.
And along the same vein... Even though they’re handled lightly and not a huge drag, the story also covers suicide, bullying, sexual orientation, and blackmail. Topics I don’t usually go for.

First that Mud Boy, Artemis Fowl, appears to be suffering from a guilty conscience triggering a fairy psychosis called the Atlantis Complex. The boy sends his bodyguard away, lures several high ranked members of LEPrecon out into the middle of nowhere, and provides the perfect distraction for the mastermind’s plans. Nothing can get in his way now… cue sinister laughing.

Why I started this book:

I picked up Atlantis Complex because I have read the previous six Artemis Fowl books. It wasn’t available in audio from the library yet or I would have selected that format.

Likes:

Atlantis is a secondary city for the fairies. It’s not as big as Haven, but it’s just as important. I wish there had been more time spent in and around Atlantis instead of just focused on the prison and the mastermind’s escape route.
The giant squid was pretty epic. I like how it was a thinking creature and used tools, primitive though they were. (“I’m a nut!”)
The reprogrammed amorphobots. Foaly’s peaceful scientific advances intent on looking for life on Mars becoming nearly unbeatable weapons was pretty cool and clever.

Dislikes:

Orion Fowl was a waste of space both inside Artemis’ head and also on page. I expected more than bad poetry frankly as Artemis’ arch enemy.
Foaly was completely useless. He was good for the phone he carried, that’s it. The rest of the time he was patently unhelpful always saying the goo-bots he built weren’t programmed to do what they were doing. Of course they weren’t! That’s why everything was going to hell in a hand-basket.
Artemis should have been fully healed from the Atlantis Complex before the end of the book. I don’t like that it’s been left open for a plot device in the next book.

Movie Review: Rio starring Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway

Summary: Meet Blu. He’s a flightless baby macaw stolen from the forests surrounding Rio de Janerio. Taken to America he’s lost in the streets by a shipping mishap and discovered by a young girl, Linda. They grow up together and neither really knows anything is missing from their lives because of their close relationship. One day an ornithologist (someone who studies birds) shows up and begs the two to come down to South America to meet Jewel, a female cerulean blue macaw. He hopes Blu and Jewel will hit it off and mate, because Blu is the last male of his species and this could mean the survival of the endangered birds. They go, but Blu (and Jewel) is stolen once more because of how valuable he is as the last of his kind and it’s up to Linda, Dr. Barbosa, Blu and Jewel to figure out how to find each other again.

Why I watched this movie:

I love animated movies and I like to see how they develop in techniques from one to the next. Plus this looked like a happy film.

Likes:

Rio’s art directors and team recreated beautifully and in detail the flavor and feel of Rio de Janerio. They had carnivale with tons of costumes, beautifully designed floats, and color! Lots of color and movement! They showed the poorer side of the city (including the young orphan boy’s open air space on top of tin roof). They had rainforests. It was overall a very visually appealing movie.
The birds and their feathers were lovingly detailed. They looked like feathers, they moved like birds, and they acted like birds I thought. The opening and ending sequence with all the types of birds flying around is really choreographed and exceptional.
I thought Linda’s and Blu’s relationship was tender and true to the type of relationship I see with my bird owner friends. You got to love how Blu wakes Linda up in the morning. They really are best friends and two peas in a pod.
I loved Dr. Barbosa as a character. He reminds me of a friend from college in all the best ways. He’s kooky, a character, and fun-loving.
Jesse Eisenberg is fantastic as the voice actor for Blu. He really was perfect for the part and I enjoyed all his inflections.
The thieving monkeys!!! So funny. When I first saw them I thought they would be working for humans, but no they just like shiny things.

Dislikes:

The drooling dog – ew. Gross. Gross. Gross. Haha.
The plot isn’t all complicated, but that’s why it’s a kid’s movie.

Summary: After her parents’ divorce, Tansy Miller quits being a good girl. She stops reading, a passion she loved to share with her father but can’t stomach anymore, and starts dating a local bad boy. When she gets caught for an act of vandalism she didn’t commit or condone doing, Tansy figures life can’t get any worse... until her fairy godmother Chrysanthemum Everstar says she’s 72% pathetic. Ugh. Chrissy gives her 3 wishes to fix her life and Tansy isn’t going to waste them.

Why I started this book:

I loved the first book in the series, had to read this one!

Likes:

Tansy is a rebellious teen, a little cliched in her approach to get back at her dad, but then again the girl does start out %72 pathetic. I love how her first efforts to change that make it worse instead of better. She evolves into a character you can root for as the plot moves forward.
Hudson – a manly high school senior – not a joke or an oxymoron. He’s not into the high school drama, believes and works for justice, is respectful, honorable, but still a little tarnished which just makes him that much sexier in a knight’s armor.
I love how Tansy and Hudson play off each other in this book, especially when they butt heads in the beginning because of Hudson tricking her into snitching on her (ex) boyfriend.
Rumpelstiltskin storyline – wow! Awesome.

Dislikes:

Uh how stupid is the dad? All buddy-buddy with the stepson and ignoring his own daughter until she does something too outrageous and finally gets his attention coming across like a hardcase. Yet he wonders why she’s got issues? Eye roll.
The leprechaun once again didn’t appeal to me. He’s got to go and Chrissy agrees!

Last Minute Thoughts: When will Chrissy get her next assignment?

Summary: Demonglass is the sequel to Hex Hall. Sophie Mercer recently found out she’s a demon, not a witch, that’s why her magic is different and more powerful. It even explains why she messes up so spectacularly. Determined not to be another tragic demon statistic Sophie wants to go through the removal, a process that removes all magic and magical connections from her body. Her previously absentee father on the other hand shows up and puts his foot down. Instead he whisks her off to Britain to learn about being a demon and to train her magic.

Why I started this book:

I read Hex Hall and loved it. I found Hawkins writing to be smart, sassy, and funny. I wanted to keep up with the series.

Likes:

Sophie didn’t curse so much in this book. Or if she did, at least it didn’t stand out to me like it did in Hex Hall.
I liked learning the perspective of the Eye on Hex Hall. How’s that for a twist? Not so delinquent are they these youthful Prodigium (magical beings)?
Archer Cross still, though I’m really impressed by Sophie (Hawkins too) for how she dealt with him. When she held the coin and didn’t go to him the first time – wow! Two thumbs way up for sensible heroines. You never know if he could have had a legion or two of the Eye waiting for her... even if it did seem unlikely. Very impressed.
Cal and his importance to the storyline. I think he’s an equally good contender for the role of the hero and love interest. It will be interesting to see how Sophie handles everything. Spoiler: The reason Sophie’s pictured in white on the cover is because she’s engaged (arranged by her father) to Cal.

Dislikes:

I didn’t find this book as funny as Hex Hall, though it still had plenty of humorous elements.
Nick and Daisy – the other kids at Thorne Abbey (head of the temporary headquarters of the Prodigium Council run by Sophie’s dad) – they’re not likable (though Hawkins tries to throw in some things to make you sympathetic). I wouldn’t have followed them to London on a bet.
That for a portion of a book you couldn’t tell if Sophie’s dad was good or not.

Last Minute Thoughts: Not a bad sequel, solid book. I am ready for book three... which according to Rachel Hawkins back in February, "HEX HALL 3... HAS A TITLE I JUST CAN'T SAY IT YET."

Summary: Violet, Kluas and Sunny Bauldilair were at the beach when Mr. Poe comes and tell them that their parents had died in a fire. At their house all they find are ashes. Arrangements are made so that the kids live with Mr. Poe at his house while he tries to find them a relative to live with on a permanent basis. Mr. Poe finds them a place to live with Count Olaf. At Count Olaf's many bad things happen to them... in a series of unfortunate events!

Like:

I love Violet. She is always trying to invent something. For instance, later in the story Violet invents a grappling hook out of old clothes and old wire. How does she think of things like that so quickly? I would be hard pressed that is for sure.
Justice Starauss is very kind to the kids. He lets them use the library and helps them buy food so they can cook for Count Olaf and the troupe of people living with him.
Klaus and Violet are always taking care of Sunny and making sure she doesn’t get into trouble. I have a hard time with one sister that's closer to my age! So while it might not be very accurate in normal circumstances, the Bauldilair kids are a whole other ball of wax.

Dislike:

Mr. Poe doesn’t believe them when they are trying to tell him that Count Olaf is a terrible man and gives them way too many chores to do. Mr. Poe should know what sort of kids they are from when they lived with him and it's really important for adults to take kids seriously when it comes to stuff like that.
When Count Olaf puts on a play that is called the Marvelous Marriage. In actuality it is not a play but a real marriage ceremony. He wants to get the Bauldilair fortune that they were left with and does it through trickery. Plus, can you imagine being married to the guy? Gross!
