    Title: Heck: Where the Bad Kids Go (The Nine Circles of Heck, Book 1)

    Summary: The afterlife isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. A bureaucratic error sends Milton down to Heck with his sister Marlo. There’s no way he deserves to be here – just look at his file – one measly little Post-It note saying he was duped by his kleptomaniac sister into stealing right before they died. But as Milton learns, it’s not your first impression that counts the most in the afterlife but your last.

    Why I started this book:

    They die in a marshmallow explosion! The humor of this book drew me in and I checked it out from the library.

    Likes:

    • There is a lot of humor in the story from the infamous marshmallow explosion to acronym fun to a toad like principal named Bea Elsa Bubb and her three headed tiny canine.
    • Milton and Marlo’s sibling relationship – are they fighting each other or for each other? It’s typical but loving.
    • I like how it ends. I like that some characters were willing to sacrifice a chance of escape to ensure one got away. Surely that means they’re redeemable and/or redeemed right?
    • The bully reminds me a lot of Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter. Love it!

    Dislikes:

    • Some of the world building didn’t sit right with me because it seemed like small infractions were being punished endlessly and I’m guessing that’s why Milton is down there to right these wrongs, but I don’t know for sure.
    • Also I think some references might be more for adults than younger readers when the author refers to certain famous dead people, but I could be wrong. I love that Nixon teaching ethics, but do kids know why it's so funny?

    Summary: After Katniss’s survival of the Quarter Quell, she is whisked of to underground (literally and figuratively) District 13. Over the course of the book Katniss is preparing for when she can go fight in the seemingly apocalyptic war and try to kill President Snow. She is constantly going back and forth in her mind between Peeta and Gale.

    Why I started this book:

    It is the third book in a trilogy. The second book (Catching Fire) has a huge cliffhanger that makes your jaw drop to the floor. I could hardly wait while this was on hold at the public library.

    Likes:

    • The almost robotic- like timing and mannerism of the events and people in District 13.
    • The mockingjay pin from the mayor's daughter (in The Hunger Games) comes full circle to being the mascot/face of the rebellion against the capital.
    • That Katniss keeps Peeta’s pearl.
    • The Capital kept Peeta hostage after the Quarter Quell and poisoned his mind to hate Katniss. During Catching Fire, I thought for sure Katniss was going to end up with Peeta, but with his ‘condition’ it changes the whole Gale- Katniss- Peeta love triangle.
    • Like Caroline B. Cooney or Neal Shusterman, every chapter is ended with a twist or mini cliffhanger so it’s impossible to say oh I’m going to read 1 chapter right now. You end up reading almost half the book.

    Dislikes:

    • Prim’s fate. It seems unfair. I would say more, but it would give it away

    Last minute thoughts: I have given all of these books 4 and 5 treasure chests. The first one, The Hunger Games, I thought, WOW this book is awesome, nothing can top it…I was right; until I read Catching Fire and I thought the same thing about it…until I read this!

    Title: Disney After Dark (Kingdom Keepers, Book 1)

    Summary: A group of kids tried out and landed jobs as Disney’s Magic Kingdom virtual hosts. Little did they know that they were selected for something far greater – saving Disney from takeover by its own villains. They can see what’s going on because of the cutting edge technology used to transform them into holograms. When they go to sleep they become part of both the real world and the animated world. Their only clue to stop what’s going on is a legend Walt Disney gave to the Imagineers.

    Why I started this book:

    Because I love Disney! This promised to be a great series and that’s even better!

    Likes:

    • The plot of this story is great. The whole series sounded like it would be fun and action packed and very unique.

    Dislikes:

    • I felt dropped into a story already well started. The explanations were missing or too short. I often wondered about what was really going on as I read.
    • The writing was choppy and rushed.
    • The characters were extremely underdeveloped. I didn’t know why they were chosen as Virtual Hosts and I didn’t know much about any of them, not even the main protagonist.
    • The magic of Disney wasn’t captured... at least not for me.
    • Where were the good animations trying to help stop the villains?

Shocked and horrified, she tries to hide it until an accident at a lawn party by the cliffs forces her to reveal the secret. Her life as she knew it is over. Exiled to Lackland Abbey, Tory will join others like her at the reform school… nobles hoping to return home clean of their magic. Soon though Tory will learn that status isn’t everything and sometimes there are things more important, things worth fighting for.

    Why I read this book:

    The publisher offered me a copy and I accepted because it the book sounded like the antithesis of Harry Potter. You don’t go to school to learn it. You go to school to get rid of it.

    Likes:

    • The underground secret society of nobles forming to learn their magic with the very help of the professors who are at the school trying to rid them of it. Predictable? Yes. Fun anyway? Yes.
    • The mirror and what it does. I will admit it through me for a loop the first time it was found and used for time travel. It’s a bit jarring at first, and I wondered if Tory would get back to her past, but I liked the change of pace.
    • I like that Tory never made the easy choice. She did what was right even at cost to herself.

    Toss-Up:

    • Magic doesn’t seem to have many rules. On one hand this is interesting because it allows for the unexpected results in the rules we know. On the other hand it makes for an all too convenient loop-hole to be accessed as needed.
    • Magic is being eradicated because a few aristocrats in the past didn’t like that they couldn’t do it themselves and that others in their peerage had powers and used them. That said, the commoners were still practicing and all wished they could have it and use it… with the exception of the upper middle class looking to get an in with the aristocrats. So how come it’s unknown so completely to the mages during WWII? They practically live down the street from the ruins of Lackland Abbey.

    Last Minute Thoughts: My toss-ups are probably going to be explained in future books of the series. I am looking forward to figuring everything out!

    Summary: When the people of Ember emerge from underground they are in shock. Following Lina and Doon’s advice they all trickle down to the road they see in the distance thinking the road will lead them to the Builders. It didn’t. It led them to the people of Sparks, a tiny town just beginning to find it’s feet after the nuclear war that destroyed the world as the Builders knew it. The two cities clash over resources – food, homes, work, and more and they just might go to war over it too! Did humans learn nothing?

    Why I started this book:

    I liked the first book well enough to read the second in the series.

    Likes:

    • How the clash is set up – how the two factions go from happy and welcoming to resentful and unwelcoming to the brink of war.
    • How the clash/war is avoided.
    • Who was actually behind the acts of violence against the Emberites.

    Dislikes:

    • I thought the people of Sparks took advantage of Emberites. It sounded like the Emberites were slaves doing all the hard manual labor. The Sparks population could have been working alongside but it wasn’t specifically stated. It was totally justified that the Emberites would be upset on that alone in my opinion.
    • Doon ignores Lina too much in the book. Made me sad. I liked them a lot.
    • That the people of Sparks believed a rebellious unhappy kid of their own (Torren) over a kind, upright, honest kid (Doon) of Ember.

    Summary: Once upon a time The City of Ember was built by mankind deep underground to save the human race from the brink of destruction. They populated the city with old caretakers and babies to protect the children from mankind’s loss. They stocked the city with enough supplies and food for 200 years and they also created a way to get out and passed that information onto the mayors, but over time the information got lost and now Ember is on the brink of destruction and it’s up to 2 kids to save the city.

    Why I started this book:

    I freaking love the movie City of Ember!

    Likes:

    • The concept and idea of a city underground, running out of supplies, and nobody knowing how to make it better.
    • That a lot of words like “treetops” and “sky” are not understood anymore because the Emberites don’t have any idea what they were. The library does not explain them because the Builders would not have wanted the descendents feel bad about stuff like that and the authors (the old caretakers) didn’t think there’d ever be anyone who didn’t know.
    • Lina and Doon! I definitely ship them. :) They should date, get married and have babies.

    Dislikes:

    • Not as good as the movie, see why below:

    Last Minute Thoughts: I saw the City of Ember movie before realizing it was a book series and I actually love the movie better than the book. The movie was more dramatic and real, with lots of focus on Ember’s destruction. The book is kind of muted in comparison, it’s brought up but it’s not nearly as dire sounding as the way the movie portrayed the shortage of everything and the movie also gives more hints of a nuclear destruction from the time of the Builders with Doon and Lina coming across giant sized animals including a beetle, a moth, and a giant scary mole! Also the parents in the movie had tried to escape themselves and saw signs of the city deteriorating which added drama but the book did not have that element.

    Title: Catching Fire

    Summary: Katniss and Peeta arrive back from the 74th Hunger Games as victors. Katniss thought all she wanted was to go home, but things aren't the same. Gale is ignoring her and Peeta is trying to do the same. It's hard to do that though when you're engaged to marry that same person. Rumors of rebellion are springing up all over Panem and Katniss and Peeta are said to be the head of it. Every 25 years the victors from the previous Hunger Games are forced to compete again and against each other in the Quarter Quell.

    Why I Started This Book:

    Easy! I read Hunger Games, loved it and want to know what happens next in the series.

    Likes:

    • I loved the Quarter Quell! Suzanne Collins was smart to come up with a way for Katniss and Peeta to go back into the arena. Very exciting and thrilling action takes place as the two struggle to survive!
    • Every cliff hanger is a doozy! That's another thing Collins is great at providing! You never want to quit because there's always something else happening; another challenge to face and resolutions to find.

    Dislikes:

    • The ending is pretty confusing. I'm not sure what to make of it and it's really my only complaint for the whole book.

    Last minute thoughts: When does book 3 come out?!?! I checked the author's website but didn't see anything.

    Title: The Hunger Games

    Summary: Katniss Everdeen’s sister was picked for the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games were established a long time ago when one district of thirteen tried to rebel against the capital. After squashing the rebellion, every year one boy and girl is picked from each district to go and take part in the Hunger Games, which is a battle to the death. Katniss volunteers to take her sister’s place. Will she and the boy from her district survive? Will the other kids?

    Why I Started This Book:

    My teacher told me about it. She said it was a really good book. All my friends who have had the opportunity to read this book have loved the book. I also like Suzanne Collins as an author. It was a no brainer to pick this book up and read it.

    Likes:

    • I like how the Game Makers are in control of the game. They’re there to make sure that the audience is entertained. It reminds me a bit of the Roman Coliseum and the games of the gladiators.
    • The weird creatures – mockingjays, tracker jackets (kind of like wasps) with hallucinating venom, and the wolf-human tribute hybrids.
    • I like the setup of the story with the districts and the capital and the games. I really love how it’s supposed to be a futuristic society but that it seems so current too.
    • Suzanne Collins always ends a chapter with something exciting, gross, or foreshadowing that makes you want to immediately start the next without a moment’s hesitation. She’s really good at keeping your interest in that way.

    Dislikes:

    • One of the themes that Suzanne Collins writes about is war and the cruelty it imposes on children. It bothered me at first that it was kids going into the Hunger Games but the story soon sweeps you away.
    • I was disappointed how the book just kind of ended. I was expecting it to continue for a while more and do some more wrap up.

    Last Minute Thoughts: I didn’t want to finish the book because I didn’t have book two to start right away, but I did finish it and now I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book, Catching Fire!

    Summary: In a city called Glenbard a plague took place. Everyone over the age of 12 was dead. Once the plague passed, all the kids under 12 didn’t know what to do. That was when Lisa and her brother Todd decided to make a militia. Everything was going well until the Tom Logan, the leader of the Chidester Gang takes over Glenberd and treats all the citizens cruelly and unfair. Will Lisa’s plan to regain her city work? Or will she and everyone else be disappointed as it fails?

    Why I Started This Book:

    I read this book because it was assigned as a class project.

    Likes:

    • I liked Lisa’s confidence and bravery throughout the book. It was as if nothing could bring her down.
    • I like the character Craig. I especially liked the scene when he and Lisa were first driving to the secret place and Lisa thought that the warehouse was already looked through by someone else, but because of Craig they discovered that no one had actually took any supplies.

    Dislikes:

    • I didn’t like how when the Chidester gang burnt down Lisa’s and Todd’s house, all of Lisa's boundless confidence disappeared because of it.
    • I didn’t really get why this book was divided into 3 sections. It just seemed to be there just to be there. Why are books divided into parts?

    Last minute thoughts:

    At first when my reading teacher assigned this book to me I was almost positive that I would have to force myself to read it because of the cover. I think it’s ugly and scary. I started reading and actually liked it. Just goes to show you can’t judge a book by its cover.

    Grade Reading Level: 9th Grade

    Summary: In a near-future society, the human race is in a war against the buggers, a hostile alien race, who nearly won twice in two wide scale confrontations against humankind. Fearing a third invasion, a system was put in place to discover and train child prodigies in the art of war. This system found Ender Wiggin, and set a course for him unlike any other kid that has gone before. Is Ender the general humankind desperately needs?

    Meanwhile a second (side) plot revolves around Earth, Ender's siblings, and it's three separate governing bodies. The Hegemon, Strategos, and Polemarch, all struggle for supreme control and threaten humankind on the home front. Peter and Valentine are determined to make the world over in their image and work to achieve this through the "Nets" to influence how the masses think. Are two kids capable of achieving that sort of influence?

    Why I Started This Book:

    I can name approximately half a dozen boys over the last several years telling me I had to read this book. It was essential, a must read! I caved. Got it in audio format, because I’m grooving it right now and settled in for the long haul. I now have to apologize to the first five guys who said to read it and I ignored. Great book!

    Likes:

    • Orson’s style of writing. It’s obviously a style meant to be read aloud; in fact audio format is the best version to meet this book and is something the author mentioned at the end of CD #9.
    • Orson’s writing is very evocative. You see pictures and feel emotions and think thoughts as if you were a part of the book itself.
    • Battle School is fantastic. I loved it when Ender finally goes up in rank and starts commanding. The mock battles are some of my absolute favorite moments.
    • The surprising twist at Command School. It was an ending I did not expect it. I liked it even more when Orson took the story further and explained the aftermath. That too did not go how I pictured it might. Frankly, I was expecting that Ender was going to have to watch out for Peter.

    Dislikes:

    • Very little. I was going to say the graphic nature of some of the fights or the violence but as Orson pointed out in his ramble at the end of the CD #9 the language is in fact very plain. All graphic nature is rendered through the reader.

    Last Minute Thoughts: It’s definitely a book for boys as it deals on many fronts issues boys face more often than girls such as bullying and warfare. Ender also goes through a crisis of identity of self. He does not want to be a killer (or hurt others) but is forced to become one. I think the following quote explains this very well:

    Unlike his brother, Ender does not take pride in destroying others and commits this action because he is often pushed into situations which demand physical defense. This portrayal and situation in the novel justifies Ender's actions. (Nick M. on Amazon.com)

    I am glad I came to this book now instead of earlier in my life. I don’t think I would have appreciated it then. I do now. It’s terrific! I’m giving the audio book to my dad and telling him to listen to it. He’s on CD #2 and loves it so far.
