Why I Started This Book:

I’m a huge fan of literary witches; hence my keen interest. The new active digital fiction for Kindle also spoke to my curious nature. Glad I listened when it spoke.

Likes:

I loved the choice points in the story, and that I chose what happened next.
Finally! An author who explored the warlock origin.
Logan has a tattoo that only appears when his body heat rises. (Grin).
Lily and Logan share telepathic powers and can have mental conversations. I thought that was cool!
The author knows how to express the sense of urgency in the story, and her vivid descriptions are really great.
It has a powerful cliffhanger ending that will leave you craving more.

Dislikes:

I wanted more! (See cliffhanger in likes). Yes, I’m contradicting myself, but it really is a pro and a con.

Last Minute Thoughts: In a battle I managed to snatch powers off a warlock, and can now wield his powers of prediction. I’m predicting you’ll be powerless to resist this new series. The Spellspinners of Melas County will blow you away. Be forewarned, there’s a new group of magic users in the literary world. And they’re not like the others!

But things aren’t all rosy within the Facade Agency and Desi knows something fishy is going on when it comes to magic, but isn’t sure enough of herself to confront upper management about it. Why is magic used only on royals and makeup and bubble transports?

Meanwhile, Desi just wants a chance to see her Prince Karl again, even if a romance between them is against the rules, and star in her school’s production of Midsummer’s Night Dream. She gets her chance when she subs for the princess dating Karl’s brother and lands a role in the play starring opposite her friend’s crush… life couldn’t get more complicated!

Why I started this book:

I read and loved Princess for Hire and asked the publisher for an ARC, which they gave me.

Likes:

Desi is a good friend and a strong female character. She’s interested in doing the right thing for herself and her princesses, even if it means sticking her neck out to do it.
I liked how the relationships on the home front were handled between Desi, her mother, Reed, Celeste, and Kylee. They were fun and genuine. Overall a great line up of characters that are very likeable.
- Her mother is concerned and doesn’t want Desi to feel rejected when she starts prepping Celeste for beauty pageants.
- Celeste is still the snarky frenemy. I didn't like her all that much in the first book, but she's revealed more human in this one, which I like. Will she remain a frenemy or become a friend again because of Desi’s help?
- Kylee is there for Desi. How many girls are out there that would take your weird hobby jumping in stride? There’s no falling out between them over boys, which is great too.
- Reed is clearly enjoying Desi’s company and wants more, but she’s a little clueless and still in crush-mode with Karl.
The time spent at Celeste’s beauty pageant and Desi’s debut as a Watcher for Facade was awesome. Got to love somebody who’s that excited and clueless.
I loved how Prince Karl and Desi’s crush was handled. OMGosh that ending is spectacular. I can’t wait for Princess for Hire #3!

Why did you read the book:

I read this book because I wanted to see the movie, and in order to see the movie my eldest sister told me I had to read the book and so that’s exactly what I did.

Likes:

I enjoy the idea of vampires in a romance novel! He loves you so much he wants to drink your blood - that's hot.
I love all of the characters in this book, it wouldn’t be Twilight as we know it without them all. The Cullens are a great part of the book. They are a fantastic family.
Edward’s and Bella’s chemistry is one of the best parts of the book. It’s AWESOME! Won't spoil you further you have to read the book for yourself!
One of the best parts of this book is the action! It’s probably the BEST (and only) action filled romance book I’ve ever read. James is scary.

Dislikes:

I don’t like Jacob Black! He likes Bella and loathes Edward, it just doesn’t make sense who (how can you not LOVE Edward Cullen?!?). Go team Edward!

Why I read this book:

I was offered a review copy by the author. In addition, I was interested in learning the secret to effective expository writing… *cough* acing that pesky term paper *cough*

Why you should read this book:

Ever wanted to write the perfect term paper or ace a weighty presentation? Philip Yaffe’s The Gettysburg Approach will give the keys to successful writing to any student wishing to learn and willing to do the legwork. The text itself is a useful example of all of the principles, tips, and instructions the author explains throughout the book.

Early emphasis is on clarity, conciseness, and density. Formulas define what these words mean with instructions and exercises for applying them to your writing. Later Yaffe covers the differences between writing and speaking and how to make slide show presentations work for the speaker and listener alike.

Yaffe employs repetition and summation throughout the book to get points across and make sure they stick. Appendixes A-M continue the lessons from the main text of the book and provide plenty of practice to make sure you get what to do.

Aimed at college freshmen, Gettysburg Approach would also be good for high school students. Beyond the student application, I believe this book to be a good investment for new teachers wishing to keep students engaged. In addition, it would be good for presenters, speakers, and professionals that rely heavily on written communication.

Favorite Sections:

Author’s Story – How he learned to write (from complexity to effectiveness)
Inverted Pyramid – A journalism technique that gives busy readers what they want fast.
Line by Line Analysis – Specifically when Yaffe covers Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and Shakespeare’s Mark Anthony soliloquy about the death of Caesar and the comparison between the two speeches
Lewis Carol’s Jabborwocky Poem – How nonsense can achieve an expository feel and be solidly constructed at the same time

Last Minute Thoughts: This is nitpicky, but I wish attention, attention span, or focus, was used in place of mind control throughout the book. Personally it jolted me out of the reading because it seemed at times the prevalent idea appeared to be mind control, not effective writing, though gaining and retaining reader attention resulted from professional writing. I have no interest in mind control.

Now he goes to Claverage Middle school and stays with Mrs. Donelly and her daughter Sophie. At school Cap sticks out like a sore thumb. He gets elected for eighth grade president and wins! But being president wasn’t what Cap wanted. Not at all! At home, Sophie is giving him a hard time, but when Cap goes missing everyone gets worried and thinks he died. They even plan a memorial from him. Did Cap really die? And how will he survive school until Rain is better again?

Why I Started This Book:

I read Schooled because it was on a list of books for my grade level, and if I read all of the books on the list I get to go to a party. So I’m reading all of them! I made Schooled a priority when I first heard what the book was about I couldn’t wait to put my nose in it!

Likes:

I like all the characters. The author wrote them well and gave everyone a personality and place.
This is a good book because of Gordon Korman's writing style. He wrote each chapter as a different person's point of view. Reading a book like that was a change, but I enjoyed something different.
Schooled has a great plot. The idea of a home schooled eighth grade hippie being forced to go to normal school for the first time is very creative!
I like the ending of this book because it was what I wanted to happen, but it wasn’t how I thought it would be given. I won't tell you how it ends. Instead I'll make you read the book to find out.

Dislikes:

The story was good but it didn’t capture me fully, some parts and characters weren’t as interesting as others.

Last Minute Thoughts: I would read it over again, and I will read more books by Gordon Korman.

Alona expects to find the whole of Groundsboro High School and her family in a turmoil of grief but finds instead her friends are trash talking her, her BFF openly making out with her boyfriend, and that the only person who can see and hear her is a goth boy from school she never talked to while alive. Determined to gain Will Killian’s help in getting to the bright white beaches of heaven, she haunts him until he caves... but his help comes with a price. Alona’s got to keep the other ghosts away from him and inadvertently steps into the role of his spirit guide.

Why I started this book:

I requested an ARC for Queen of the Dead because it sounded cute; not realizing it was a sequel at the time. As soon as I did, I went to the library and checked out book one, The Ghost and the Goth, so I would be up to speed.

Likes:

Alona and Will are stereotypical high school clique characters on the surface but dig a little deeper and you’ll find they are multilayered. Alona’s perfect life is not so perfect. Will’s goth tendencies are not what they seem.
Alona’s vanity and superficial comments are funny. Got to love a girl who’s still concerned about her appearances in the afterlife. She’s also very insightful and smart. I like how her feelings for Will change throughout the book when she begins to notice things about his appearance (good teeth, broad chest, strong biceps…
I like how ghosts are more substantial around ghost-talkers. It certainly makes the romance between Alona and Will easier and super sexy. I always wondered how a ghost and a human would interact in a ghost romance. Love it.

Toss-Up:

I’m not sure how I feel about the chapters alternating between Alona and Will. I tend to like my narratives to be a little more cohesive than that, but overall I was appreciative of how easy it was to find out what characters were thinking in different situations.

Dislikes:

Alona’s mother’s inability to act like a grownup or a parent, and her father’s inability to stick up for his daughter to get her out of a situation where she has to act like the mom to an alcoholic because it would go against his second wife’s wishes and make his life more difficult.
And along the same vein... Even though they’re handled lightly and not a huge drag, the story also covers suicide, bullying, sexual orientation, and blackmail. Topics I don’t usually go for.

Summary: After Katniss’s survival of the Quarter Quell, she is whisked of to underground (literally and figuratively) District 13. Over the course of the book Katniss is preparing for when she can go fight in the seemingly apocalyptic war and try to kill President Snow. She is constantly going back and forth in her mind between Peeta and Gale.

Why I started this book:

It is the third book in a trilogy. The second book (Catching Fire) has a huge cliffhanger that makes your jaw drop to the floor. I could hardly wait while this was on hold at the public library.

Likes:

The almost robotic- like timing and mannerism of the events and people in District 13.
The mockingjay pin from the mayor's daughter (in The Hunger Games) comes full circle to being the mascot/face of the rebellion against the capital.
That Katniss keeps Peeta’s pearl.
The Capital kept Peeta hostage after the Quarter Quell and poisoned his mind to hate Katniss. During Catching Fire, I thought for sure Katniss was going to end up with Peeta, but with his ‘condition’ it changes the whole Gale- Katniss- Peeta love triangle.
Like Caroline B. Cooney or Neal Shusterman, every chapter is ended with a twist or mini cliffhanger so it’s impossible to say oh I’m going to read 1 chapter right now. You end up reading almost half the book.

Dislikes:

Prim’s fate. It seems unfair. I would say more, but it would give it away

Last minute thoughts: I have given all of these books 4 and 5 treasure chests. The first one, The Hunger Games, I thought, WOW this book is awesome, nothing can top it…I was right; until I read Catching Fire and I thought the same thing about it…until I read this!

Summary: Percy doesn’t know who he is, all he knows is that these Gorgons he’s fighting don’t stay dead. Saving an old crone, who turns out to be Juno, he makes it to the Roman camp. He makes two friends right away – Hazel, a twice alive gal who’s father is Pluto which gives her some pretty unique abilities – and Franz who’s life rests on the safety of a regular stick of firewood. The three of them are given a quest and the camp and world rely on them to not fail. No pressure.

Why I started this book:

I like the series Heroes of Olympus. I want more!

Likes:

Camp Jupiter and its setup. I liked the capture the flag War Games.
Rick Riordan’s love for his source material shows through and makes the story super rich and full of depth.
Rainbow power! Hehe.
Death using an iPad to track souls. Bwuahahaha!

Dislikes:

A worldbuilding rule was broken... As Rick explains you need a god and a demigod to kill a giant.... so which god helped Frank and Hazel kill their giant in Canada?
CLIFF HANGER OF DOOOOOOMMMMMM! lol

But everything changes once her best friend, Ellen Rosen has to hide from the Nazis for being a Jew. The Johansens decide to take her in and disguise her as Annemarie's dead older sister. After that EVERYTHING is chaos! Annmarie is forced to mature. Childhood is a thing of the past. Everyone has to be brave and courageous and somehow pull though.

Why I Started the Book:

I started this book because we read it in class for a project in language arts.

Likes:

Every chapter kept me on the edge of my seat, I had to keep reading and figure out what happen!
I can't help but feel sympathetic toward Annemarie. No ten year old should have to go through what she did!
Kirsti is defiantly my favorite character in this book! She's so adorable and oblivious to everyone! She's self-centered and is always craving pink frosted cupcakes. I love cupcakes and can relate to such cravings... but mine don't necessarily have to have pink frosting.
I love the chapter where Annmarie and Ellen are waiting for the soldiers to arrive in their bed and Papa acts like a barrier and acts like he will do anything to protect his loved one! So sweet and brave!

Dislikes:

I think that it is so sad to think about World War II and the horror involved!

Last minute thoughts: This was a really good book! I defiantly want to read more book by Louis Lowry! But I wonder if all of of her books are about historic events? This book is a Newberry Award winner.

When the Scepter of the Seasons is stolen and the Crown Prince is murdered Queen Mab imprisons Meghan in ice, refusing to listen to her story that the Iron Fey did it, and calls for war on the Summer Court. A new battle to save the Nevernever begins, but first Meghan’s got to free herself.

Why I started this book:

I love the first novel and short story of Iron Fey Series and requested the book from the publisher.

Likes:

Grimalkin is still my favorite snarky cat. I love him to pieces.
Iron Horse comes back and is developed past the steaming loudmouth from the first book and really becomes quite likable. It makes his fate very sad.
Puck recovers and is back to his usual merrymaking and has a blast fighting against the Iron Fey. He declares himself to Meghan and they share some kisses.
Ash is the damaged hero of my dreams. He’s constantly struggling with himself. He knows he should push Meghan away and does so but then he does what he feels and that’s pulling her closer.
Virus is one fun power tripping bad gal. Too bad she can’t be swayed to the good side; she’d make an excellent lieutenant.
The double crossing and back stabbing betrayal of certain members of the Winter Court. Hehe. Nobody saw that coming did they? Wink.
Meghan’s accidental discovery of Iron glamour.

Toss-Up:

Leanesidhe is a toss-up for me. I’m not for or against her at this point. She’s very interesting being the first fey to build a Court for herself outside of the Nevernever by using the In-Between. She’s helpful because it’s in her best interests, but if it’s not, watch out!

Dislikes:

It seemed obvious to me why Ash was acting as he was to Meghan and considering he told her time and again he’d have to act a certain way in the Winter Court, so when she acts surprised and is hurt I just wanted to shake her. That girl thought up all sorts of wrong reasons why he’s cold and distant (mean) to her instead of just listening to him and going with what he said. He was very upfront and was trying to protect her from the shenanigans that would have happened had others known of his interest.
The Puck/Meghan relationship isn’t fleshed out convincingly enough to make this a strong love triangle. The decision seems so clear and in the end Meghan really didn’t have a choice to make, she already knew what she was going to do.
