Summary: Pika, the unnamed girl, is the youngest child in a large family. She lives in a place that has seen too much winter and not enough summer. On the day she releases a White Deer and is granted a boon, Pika’s life changes forever. She can talk to animals, she understands them and they her. News of her ability has traveled far so far it captures the attention of a giant polar bear who commands her to come away with him.

Why I started this book:

I chose this book because the novel promised to be a written version of the Norwegian Beauty and Beast fable White Bear, King Valemon legend. I also love and own The Polar Bear King movie. And also, because I really liked the Dragon Adventure trilogy by the author.

Likes:

  • That Pika didn’t have children and lose them the way the original tale goes.
  • When Prince Asher says (paraphrase), “How could I not love you after sleeping beside you, sharing your meals, and listening to you talk about your family for a year?”
  • The trolls fascination with tools. That was a good explanation and required no magic outside of their own to explain in the story.
  • Rollo, Pika’s wolf. I liked him as a character and guard dog.

Dislikes:

  • That Prince Asher was silent and dead asleep every night and that most of their conversations were limited when he was a polar bear even though Pika had the ability to hear and understand animals. Hans Peter’s sleep talking should have gone to Prince Asher. Overall too much tell and not enough show in the story for the romance to be convincing.
  • That Pika didn’t connect the human man and the polar bear despite constantly reading the troll language in the main hallway.
  • The multiple Polar Bear princes and silly females who always stupidly spy on the Isbjorn at night. It makes sense as the Troll Princess has lived for over 3000 years, but I felt it too much especially with Pika’s brother having been one.

Why I Started the Book:

I started this book because it was a school assignment and the only reason I continued reading it was because I was forced to read it. If I wasn't forced to read it I would have quit the book in a heartbeat.

Likes:

  • I liked the chapter with Tom and Viola. Jeddy and Ruben skipped school to meet Tom and discuss the body. I thought it was a great chapter, until Viola got shot! Poor Viola.

Dislikes:

  • When I was reading this book I feel asleep a few times. Sweet escape! Well that is until I woke up and then I had to keep reading.
  • I don't exactly know why I didn't like this book. I guess I didn't like the subject matter and the writing style. It's very slow in the beginning. I never did get interested in the story.
  • As I mentioned earlier the best part was the chapter with Tom and Viola. But it was ruined! Some parts I thought “This is a good part” but then it would get ruined!

Last minute thoughts: At first when I read the back of this book it sounded all mysterious and something different and new to read. I don't understand how a lot of other people in my class liked this book. I didn't at all. There were two other people in my group who were also reading it and one liked it and the the other didn't.

Why I Started the Book:

I'm finally finished rereading the Harry Potter series! Now I'm ready for the double movies.

Likes:

  • Very little. I liked the Hallows.
  • I liked the uber wand switcheroo at the end of the novel.
  • I liked Harry's self-sacrifice and how Hagrid carries him out of the forest. It was so sad.

Dislikes:

  • This book was so terrible. I did not imagine my dislike the first time I read this book. It read like Rowling stopped caring. In my mind the series is done at book six.
  • If you liked the epilogue of this book than I must be missing something but I think that the way that J.K. Rowling ended the book was the absolute “WORST” way to end the book. For those who haven't read the book or are reading it I won't spoil it for you but considering all the other great things that J.K. Rowling has done with this series I have to wonder is this really the best she can come up with? Seriously? I will never think about J.K. Rowling the same way ever again.
  • If I had to pick between Fred or George Weasley surviving. I'd pick Fred. I wish Fred hadn't died. They're such a pair.

Last Minute Thoughts: As I mentioned in Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix movie review their making Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows into two movies and I also stated the if they're going to make any movie into two parts it should be book five. It's longer and they're probably adding a lot more to the story (hurrah!).

Title: Gregor and the Marks of Secret

Summary: Gregor and Boots frequently go to the Underland to visit their mother, who was a victim of the plague. When they returned for Hazard’s birthday party Gregor finds out Luxa needs him. The mice that saved her are disappearing. In an attempt to figure out what is happening to the mice the whole gang (Gregor, Luxa, Ares, Aurora, Howard, Nike, Boots and Temp) set out on another adventure.

Why I Started This Book:

At this point I have read three in the Underland series. It made sense to continue on with number four and while I am less than thrilled with the constant quests, I hoped it would get better.

Likes:

  • I like that this quest wasn’t preordained through prophecy.
  • Giant scorpions of awesome!
  • I really like Hazard’s ability to speak in multiple animal languages. This really came in use with the giant scorpions.

Dislikes:

  • It’s funny (to me anyway) when Photos Glow-Glow and Zap come back, because in book two they were ditched. The two are part of the journey for only a small portion and then they are ditched again.
  • The plot drifted. There wasn’t an exciting climax or conclusion. If anything it was a small hump... like a speedbump.
  • While reading, this book almost put me to sleep several times because it was so boring.

Last Minute Thoughts: I still want to continue this book series in case it gets better, but I don’t have much hope. Luckily there is only one book left to go.
