If you are planning to go to Harry Potter World check out the photos below and read the tips. They should make your trip to Potterland easier and more fun.

This is the backside of Hogsmeade. It's what you see on your way into Harry Potter World if you're coming from Jurassic Park. It must be magic, because there's snow in Florida!

Things to consider bringing to the park: a water bottle (it's so humid and hot); an umbrella (provides shade in sun and protection from afternoon showers); a small wash cloth that you can wet and use to cool yourself with (very practical!)

This is the line for the new ride at Harry Potter called the Forbidden Journey. This section of the line is only for those in need of a locker to store their gear and if you have any gear you must get in this line. If not you can bypass it entirely and get into the actual ride line. (Tip: Go Single Rider to avoid the wait. Our maximum wait time was 20 minutes; most of the time it's less.)

On the other hand you miss out on a bunch of cool things by going Single Rider on the Forbidden Journey. You miss seeing the Herbology greenhouse, the house point cup counter, the statue guarding Dumbledore's office, Dumbledore's office, the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, the Golden trio talking about the ride, Ron making it snow on you, the Fat Lady's portrait, etc.

Tip: You can bring a camera, but they make you store it before you get strapped into your seat on the ride.

The herbology line area... it's windy and takes a while to get through but after this point you're in air conditioning and in our case we got hustled through the rest of the line very quickly.

Dumbledore's Office is a very cool area, lots of storage and display cases. Went through way too fast to get much more than this shot!

The DADA classroom. I loved the dragon skeleton. This is where Ron makes it snow on you. I think it was a lighting trick but again before I could get a better look the ride staff was moving us along.

These are some of the non-moving portraits in the Gryffindor common room. (The moving portraits turn black when you snap a photo of them.)

This is the Hippogriff Flight ride. It's short but fun if you want to meet Buckbeak.

The following is a quick guide to Horcruxes: what they are, how to create them, how to eliminate them, and their powers.

Quickly put: Horcruxes are an object with a piece of somebody's soul inside.

A soul in the Harry Potter universe is represented as a whole. Albus Dumbledore explains to Harry Potter that a whole is more powerful than a fragment. But clearly if one can split it in this fantasy series then a soul must be made out of parts. J.K. Rowling once said that creating a Horcrux is equivalent to splitting an atom. The spitting of one’s soul, like splitting an atom, is hardly wise because the remaining structure is unstable.

"Something that people imagined might be able to be done, but couldn't quite bring it off, and then... and then people started doing it with sometimes catastrophic effects."

It was believed that a Horcrux would keep a wizard alive because with his soul in pieces it could not move on to the afterlife. This greatly appealed to Voldemort who was researching ways into achieving immortality. He did many other things besides creating Horcruxes (though we don’t know what) because he wasn’t certain which process would actually work.

Lord Voldemort was the only wizard smart enough or foolish enough to attempt more than one split. He aimed for the magical number 7, believing that 7 pieces of soul were more powerful than 1 whole soul. He failed to create 7 and actually created 8 slices, which we can only suppose aided in his downfall. According to Horace Slughorn no wizard would possibly want to be in such a state and would prefer death instead as the creation of one makes the creator less human. This perhaps explains Voldemort’s mutated appearance into a snake-like creature.

Voldemort’s 8 soul fragments: Riddle Diary, Slytherin Locket, Hufflepuff Cup, Gaunt Ring, Harry’s Scar, Nagini, Ravenclaw Diadem, Voldemort himself

Once the fragment of soul is carefully split away it is forced into an object. It could be any object, but in Voldemort’s case he selects very specific trophy-like items in which to store his soul. Once Harry and Dumbledore saw the pattern it was only too easy to figure out what the objects were.

Hermione: "This is the one that gives explicit instructions on how to make a Horcrux. Secrets of the Darkest Art – it’s a horrible book, really awful, full of evil magic… And the more I’ve read about them, the more horrible they seem, and the less I can believe that he actually made six. It warns in this book how unstable you make the rest of your soul by ripping it, and that’s just by making one Horcrux!"

The process of creating a horcrux is fairly vague in the book series, but Rowling plans to explain further in a future release about the Harry Potter series. The rumor is the editor wanted to vomit after reading about it. What we know is this – it involves a murder and a spell – and it is considered a violation of moral decency and natural laws.

Once the Horcrux is created it is possible to un-create it by the original creator. It would invariably cause the creator great pain. Rejoining the soul could even possibly kill the witch or wizard in the process.

Ron: "Isn’t there any way of putting yourself back together?"

Hermione: "Yes, but it would be excruciatingly painful… Remorse. You’ve got to really feel what you’ve done. There’s a footnote. Apparently the pain of it can destroy you. I can’t see Voldemort attempting it somehow, can you?"

Clearly this will never be done by Voldemort, because he does not feel remorse. He will never feel remorse because he’ll never want to put his soul together. Voldemort created his Horcruxes because he wanted eternal life.

Lucky for Harry and the wizarding world, Horcruxes can be destroyed by anyone. It did not have to be reabsorbed by the creator to be destroyed. This is why Voldemort took such great care and went to such great lengths to hide his Horcruxes and to lay traps for them.

Destruction of a Horcrux requires that the object housing the soul fragment to be damaged beyond all magical aid. When a Horcrux is so damaged it can appear to bleed out and a scream may be heard as the soul fragment perishes. This is not always the case and nobody knows why a Horcrux will or won’t act that way.

Known ways to destroy a Horcrux include Basilisk venom (most deadly poison), fiendfyre (so hot everything must melt), killing curse (on living hosts), Godric Gryffindor’s sword (because it was Goblin made and absorbs only that which makes it stronger, like Basilisk venom).

Ron: "The bit of soul in that diary was possessing Ginny, wasn’t it? How does that work, then?"

Hermione: "While the magical container is still intact, the bit of soul inside it can flit in and out of someone if they get too close to the object. I don’t mean holding it for too long…I mean close emotionally. Ginny poured her heart out into that diary, she made herself incredibly vulnerable. You’re in trouble if you get too fond of or dependent on the Horcrux."

Horcruxes think for themselves and will act to protect themselves from external threats. They can possess witches and wizards who don’t know what they are dealing with. Arthur Weasley gives very good advice:

“Never trust anything that can think for itself, if you can't see where it keeps its brain.”

This is what happen to Ginny in Chamber of Secrets. She trusted the diary to be her friend and opened herself up to it emotionally. If Harry hadn’t rescued her and destroyed the Riddle Diary Horcrux, Ginny’s life force would have been swallowed up by the Horcrux and used to give the soul fragment a new body. Not good! The Slytherin Locket Horcrux made the golden trio moodier and paranoid. Long term exposure was breaking down their will power and who knows perhaps eventually it too would have tried to used one of them to gain a new body.

Who hasn’t dreamt about going to Hogwarts? I bet we all have at one point or another. I’d love to see the Great Hall and to try navigating the moving staircases and bouncing rooms. I’d like to try out for Quidditch (maybe as the Keeper) and earn points for my house (Ravenclaw perhaps?). But most of all I want to learn magic.

Unlike other kids who would be slacking off playing Exploding Snap (not that I’d mind playing a round or six) I’d be in the library soaking up knowledge and looking for extra credit projects in order to learn more. I wouldn’t be like Ron trying to get Hermione to do my homework, I’d want to tackle it myself and learn all about what makes magic work so I could be better at it.

To that end I think us Muggles (and Muggleborn) would be more interested in classes than Purebloods and mixed generation witches and wizards. So tell me what class do you most want to take at Hogwarts and why!

I’d choose Charms because I’d want to have magic cook my meals and clean my house or Defense Against the Dark Arts because I want to know I can kick some Death Eater butt and should I ever need it I could suck up to Harry for some help. lol Perhaps even the apparition lessons, because really who wants to be stuck in traffic all the time? It would be so much easier to zap yourself from one place to the next!

One of the biggest debates in Potterverse is Harry’s love life. There are Ginny fans and haters and both sides are equally passionate about their cause. I myself am not a Ginny supporter. I’ve written a whole post about how Ginny and Harry are the least romantic couple ever. Today I thought I’d turn it over to you guys. If you could rewrite Harry Potter, who would you pair Harry up with?

Biggest contenders are Hermione Granger, Luna Lovegood, and Cho Chang. But what about the more unknown girls at Hogwarts? Who would like to see Harry end up with Susan Bones or Hannah Abbot? Daphne Greengrass? Padma or Pravati Patil? What about Mandy Brocklehurst or Lisa Turpin? Could there even be a Millicent Bulstrode supporter out there? Or someone who wants to see Harry wind up with Draco’s Hogwarts girlfriend (loosely used), Pansy Parkinson? Or Ron’s Lavender Brown? There’s even Sally-Anne Perks, a girl in Harry’s year, but so unknown that she doesn’t even have a known house assignment. Or Moon who could be boy or girl and in any house? Those are only the girl’s in Harry’s year and outside of that many more names pop up like Fleur Delacour or her sister Gabrielle.

I’ve read many fanfics that showcase several of the girls above as Harry’s perfect companion and lover. Susan Bones for her loyalty, brains, simple prettiness, and political connections through her aunt is often cited. Daphne Greengrass because she’s the supposed ice queen of Slytherin and above Slytherin/Pureblood politics but knows how to play the game and could help Harry navigate it. Padma Patil is the girl most picked from Ravenclaw, but she’s usually chosen because Harry realizes he’s made serious errors when it came to their horrible date at the Yule Ball in year four and wants to make amends.

If it were me I’d pick Hermione or Luna as they are my favorite girl characters outside of Fleur (who sadly saw Harry as a leetle boy). If not one of them then one of the other girls with little background would do because there’s so much more wiggle room to create the girl’s character and to build the relationship with.

An old standard question, but a fun one, because there are so many awesome characters to choose from in the Potterverse. The rules are as follows:

1. You can’t pick Harry Potter.
2. You can’t pick his best friends, Ron and Hermione.
3. You can’t pick his mentor (Dumbledore) or his nemesis (Voldemort).

If you do I’ll have to Abracadabra you…

I’ll go first and I won’t even use my standby of the Weasley Twins, whom I love dearly and would want to meet in real life if I could.

I’m going to go with the fake Mad-Eye Moody. Yes, you heard that right. I just picked Barty Crouch Jr. Why? Why on earth would I pick him of all the characters? I’ll tell you why…

Barty is a fully realized character. He’s developed and he’s interesting.

He comes from a light family with strict and stern principles and yet he becomes a servant of the Dark Lord. He earned 12 O.W.L.S. He’s smart but highly twisted.

He’s done bad things as a Death Eater, most notably being one of the bad guys torturing Neville Longbottom’s parents. He’s evil… and yet still appears (in disguise of course) to others as a decent person.

According to the timeline, he’s the first to escape Azkaban with his father’s help. At the start of Goblet of Fire he had been out of Azkaban for ten years, but heavily guarded by his dad. The world thought he’d died in prison and it wasn’t until the Dark Lord with Pettigrew’s help released him from his father’s Imperius hold.

From that point on and in very short order he managed to successfully (probably with Voldemort’s or Pettigrew’s help) beat a fully trained paranoid and most successful ex-Auror after years without a wand.

Then he proceeded to pulled the wool over everybody’s eyes by successfully throwing himself into character as Mad-Eye Moody: Limp. Paranoia. Rough Charm. Attitude. Memories. Secret Codes (for Dumbledore I’m sure). And so on. For 8 months!

Talk about a tall order.

And on top of all that he gained the students’ trust and favor as a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. He was competent (12 O.W.L.S. probably had something to do with it) and it showed on all fronts. I loved his classes…

And he gave us the bouncing ferret…

So he still had or pretended to have a code of honor and a sense of humor.

If it were me I would want each Horcrux to be more of a challenge. It would have lengthened the series probably by a few more books (and who would mind that, really? Nobody, that’s who).

For Deathly Hallows I was expecting great drawn out battles between Harry and the Horcruxes. I was expecting them to react better and stronger as Harry had to face down a continuously older and smarter Tom Riddle.

Each successful hunt would lead to a terror/tension filled battle as Harry faced off with a memory/shade of Voldemort. If Harry failed to best it he would in essence release a second Voldemort to contend with alongside the first.

It would go on until Harry was ready to face the real thing in the final battle against Voldemort.

The reason I want this change is because of prior evidence to how Horcruxes reacted in the books before Deathly Hallows. Harry’s horcrux battles would have been more like the events of the Riddle diary Horcrux from Chamber of Secrets and less slice-and-dice as some of them were.

Even Dumbledore faced a greater challenge in destroying the Gaunt family ring in Half-Blood Prince then say Neville’s badass kill when it came to Nagini. We weren't told all the details between Dumbledore and the ring, all we really know was that Snape's expertise was required in preventing the loss of life and limb when Dumbledore came back from it. Compared to that all Neville had to do really was aim and follow through. It was a bit anticlimactic in that sense.

That’s what I’d want... more badass Horcruxes and fights between them and Harry. After all their very nature is to survive and the way they come into existence is pretty evil. They should have put up more effort!
