Movie Review: Beastly starring Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer

Summary: Kyle Kingsbury is a vain and arrogant young boy. He really steps in it when he unknowingly meets and antagonizes a witch at school going by Kendra. On the night of a school dance he’s bewitched to appear as ugly on the outside as he is on the inside. His one saving grace is the fact that he gave a scholarship girl the rose corsage he intended for his date. That one good deed buys him a chance to get out of his beastly predicament… but it’s got a time limit. Can he find someone to love and love him in return before a year is up?

Why I watched this movie:

I read the book last year when I heard it was coming out in theaters. I love Beauty and the Beast stories.

Likes:

I loved Alex Pettyfer. I thought he did really well. He’s what made the movie for me. He and Vanessa work together best during the ending sequence when she discovers who he really was all along. I liked seeing them travel the world together in the little montage.
The makeup for the movie is fantastic. I much prefer the wild tattoos and scars over a hairy form. In a cartoon, it would and did work, but it would look fake or very Cousin It. I confirmed for sure that his eyebrows say embrace suck. Embrace suck a phrase used in the movie at the beginning by both Kyle and Kendra.
Neil Patrick Harris is funny in his part as the blind tutor. He could have been used more, but that’s just me.

Toss-Up:

I liked the housekeeper getting green cards at the end of the film for her children. However, the housekeeper was supposed to be another form of the witch, Kendra, and this was changed from the book to the movie.

Dislikes:

I didn’t really like Mary-Kate Olsen in the film. She looked like how I pictured the character, but she was weird or made the character overly weird for me.
The movie lacks the charm of the book overall and has some awkward dialogue/scenes that don’t fit as well as they could.

Movie Review: Hugo starring Ben Kingsley, Asa Butterfield and Chloë Grace Moretz

Summary: Hugo Cabret lives inside the walls of a train station in Paris, France. If he’s caught he’ll be sent to an orphanage. Usually he’s pretty good at being unseen but sometimes that station inspector gets really close to catching him when he steals. His passion is fixing things and most important to him to fix is an invention his father found in a museum before he died. To fix it he steals parts from an old toymaker, but when the toymaker catches him Hugo finds that his second most prized possession is stolen instead.

Why I saw this movie:

It looked like a cool steampunk kids film and I knew it was based off a book. I figured if I liked the movie I’d get the book from the library.

Likes:

The way the story is filmed, it’s visually stunning and has this steampunk vibe.
The station inspector’s role in the story is cute and so is his romance with the florist. He like most other characters in the film have an element that’s broken ready and waiting for Hugo to fix.
The old film clips inserted into the movie to help narrate and depict key points of the story. Most pay homage to filmmaker George Méliès.
Hugo and Isabelle’s friendship and the two of them creating an adventure together. I especially like the vocabulary byplay they have going on.
The ending and how it all turns out between Hugo and the toymaker.

Dislikes:

The station inspector throwing kids into his cell and calling the police in to throw them into an orphanage. Considering the station inspector is an orphan himself, I felt he should have a little more compassion.

Book vs. Movie:

(Not all differences, but some that stood out)

The ending is different. In the book, we know that the story is being told by Professor Alcofrisbas, who is later revealed at the end to be an adult Hugo, master magician. In the movie, a young Isabelle is starting to write down the whole adventure into a journal.
The scene where Hugo is hanging from the clock is not in the book, though he does hide from the station inspector in his room after a chase sequence.
In the movie, Hugo dreams that he causes a train to jump tracks and crash through the train station. This comes from watching a film clip of a train coming into the station which freaks the audience out. In the book there’s only a discussion of this film clip.

Why I watched this movie:

I watched this movie because, I heard it was good. Also, I read the book and I wanted to compare the book to the movie. Plus I wanted to see Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen!

Likes:

I enjoyed when Edward sparkled!
I liked the scene when Edward and Bella are officially dating and they go to school and everybody is staring at them. Edward in sunglasses is hot.
I liked the actor Cam Gigandet (James). I think he did a good job. He looked scary and like he was going to kill someone.
The last scene when Bella expects Edward to bite her and he doesn’t but, kisses her neck! So cute.
One of my favorite scenes is when Edward takes Bella to their house and the Cullens make Italian for her.

Dislikes:

I think it would be better if the actresses Nikki Reed (Rosalie) and Rachelle Lefevre (Victoria) switched places. I think Rachelle is prettier than Nikki, and would be a better actress for Rosalie.
I disliked that in the beginning Edward was in Bellas’ room without her knowing, watching her sleep. (I wouldn’t like it if someone was watching me sleep... it was okay after she invited him to do so, to each their own you know.)

Summary: Meet Blu. He’s a flightless baby macaw stolen from the forests surrounding Rio de Janerio. Taken to America he’s lost in the streets by a shipping mishap and discovered by a young girl, Linda. They grow up together and neither really knows anything is missing from their lives because of their close relationship. One day an ornithologist (someone who studies birds) shows up and begs the two to come down to South America to meet Jewel, a female cerulean blue macaw. He hopes Blu and Jewel will hit it off and mate, because Blu is the last male of his species and this could mean the survival of the endangered birds. They go, but Blu (and Jewel) is stolen once more because of how valuable he is as the last of his kind and it’s up to Linda, Dr. Barbosa, Blu and Jewel to figure out how to find each other again.

Why I watched this movie:

I love animated movies and I like to see how they develop in techniques from one to the next. Plus this looked like a happy film.

Likes:

Rio’s art directors and team recreated beautifully and in detail the flavor and feel of Rio de Janerio. They had carnivale with tons of costumes, beautifully designed floats, and color! Lots of color and movement! They showed the poorer side of the city (including the young orphan boy’s open air space on top of tin roof). They had rainforests. It was overall a very visually appealing movie.
The birds and their feathers were lovingly detailed. They looked like feathers, they moved like birds, and they acted like birds I thought. The opening and ending sequence with all the types of birds flying around is really choreographed and exceptional.
I thought Linda’s and Blu’s relationship was tender and true to the type of relationship I see with my bird owner friends. You got to love how Blu wakes Linda up in the morning. They really are best friends and two peas in a pod.
I loved Dr. Barbosa as a character. He reminds me of a friend from college in all the best ways. He’s kooky, a character, and fun-loving.
Jesse Eisenberg is fantastic as the voice actor for Blu. He really was perfect for the part and I enjoyed all his inflections.
The thieving monkeys!!! So funny. When I first saw them I thought they would be working for humans, but no they just like shiny things.

Dislikes:

The drooling dog – ew. Gross. Gross. Gross. Haha.
The plot isn’t all complicated, but that’s why it’s a kid’s movie.

Movie Review: Hoot directed by Wil Shriner

Summary: This movie is based off a book by the same title. It's about a boy moving to Florida, and making friends with two kids who are concerned about a pancake house being developed over baby burrowing owl habitat. The trio pull a lot of pranks in an attempt to stop or delay the construction from starting. Can the kids rise the environmental awareness of the community in time to save them?

Why I watched this movie:

I watched this movie because I just finished reading and reviewing the book.

Likes:

The casting director did a really good job. I liked all the actors that were chosen. They seemed to match the characters pretty well.
It makes more sense that Dana Matherson is a boy. I thought that Dana was a girl when I listened to the audio version of this book, but a boy bully makes more sense beating up a boy than a girl bully beating up a boy. Well, at least to me anyway!
At the end of the movie there's this shot of Roy's shoe filled with water and a mullet. It's really funny! That apparently is the signal that Mullet Fingers wanted to see and talk to Roy.
The baby owls are completely adorable!

Dislikes:

They never mentioned that Mullet Finger's real name was Napoleon. It wasn't that important, but I think they should have.
Sometimes Dana was a little too blubbery. It's one of those bully clichés where the bully is really a wimpy kid acting out, but it go to be a little much on occasion.
I think Roy's nickname "Cowgirl" was also a little overused, before it got too irritating though it stopped. Thank goodness!

Last minute thoughts: This movie was good, but I'm not sure if I'd watch it all that often.

Summary: Harry is feeling abandoned as he hasn't heard from any of his friends since the beginning of the summer. When an odd little creature appears out of thin air and tells Harry he can not come back to school Harry is very stubborn about going. It's a matter of outwitting a determined House Elf to get to school! A flying car, almost getting run over by the school train, and getting beaten by a tree is just the beginning of Harry's problems at Hogwarts as a mysterious voice whispers through the walls, “Kill... Kill... Kill...”

Why I watched this movie:

Because I read the book and because it is part of our Harry Potter movie marathon family night at my house.

Likes:

Ron's Howler from Mrs. Weasley is AWESOME! Rupert Grint is wonderful with his expressions. He really does look like he is being scolded by an envelope.
In addition, Kenneth Branagh did a great job as Professor Lockhart. I never thought I would enjoy watching Lockhart on screen (he's bad enough in the book) but I did.

Dislikes:

I didn't like computer rendering of Doby the House Elf. He looked so fake! As if he was made out of clay.
The computer graphics also bugged me when Hermione drank the Polyjuice Potion and turned into a cat. It looked ridiculously cheesy.

Last minute thoughts: This movie is very long, but it's not as long as the first movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Summary: When the Baudilaire children are at the beach they are told that their parents had died in the fire and that their house was destroyed along with their parents. Orphaned, they go live with Count Olaf, a relative that none of them have heard of or meet. While the kids are living there they are given many chores and are not treated very nicely... and something is quite clearly afoot!

Why I watched this movie:

I had just finished reading the first book, The Bad Beginning. The movie itself is actually more than just the first book. I'm not sure how many, but I would guess it is at least about the first 3 or 4 books in the series.

Like:

I liked the actress, Emily Browning, that played Violet. She's very pretty. Browning looked just as I imagined Violet and was splendid to watch.
The way how none of the kids were going to give up; they kept on going. It's very admirable.
I liked how Violet did what was right for Klaus and Sunny. For instance when she does the play towards the end of the movie even though she really didn’t want to do it. She did it because if she didn’t Sunny was going to be dropped in the cage that was at the top of the tower.

Dislike:

The way Count Olaf (Jim Carrey) treated the children by like giving them many hard chores and then later striking Klaus a cross the face. I didn't like it in the book either.
The movie didn’t stick to the book. One change (outside of the fact it's more than one book long) in the movie is that Klaus (Liam Aiken) was the one trying to save Sunny from the tower, when in the book it was Violet. I suppose it is meant to give Aiken something to do. Also Klaus was suppose to have glasses but he doesn’t. He should have glasses. After all where would Harry Potter be without his?

Movie Review: Eragon directed by Steen Fagmeier

Summary: Eragon (played by Ed Speleers) sucks at hunting and one day when he’s out trying to hunt a deer he comes across a blue stone. But when it hatches Eragon is flabbergasted to meet Sapphira (voice by Rachel Weisz) who is a dragon. She’s the one who chose Eragon to be her Rider. Is it a mistake to make such a pathetic boy the last of the Dragon Riders? I think not!

Why I watched this movie:

Because I recently finished reading Eragon.

Likes:

I really liked Brom because he was willing to train Eragon when he didn’t have to do so. He was also very wise all that he did and he risked his life to save Eragon from getting pierced through the chest by Durza (an evil Shade). Jeremy Irons was the perfect choice for Brom and a good actor.
I also liked the way they did the special effects throughout the movie with spell casting, battles, and Sapphira. She looked real and not like she was C.G.I. She matched the world they built.

Dislikes:

I didn’t like the fact that Brom dies in the movie while trying to protect Eragon. It’s too sad.
I didn’t like that quite a bit of stuff was cut out of the movie, that was in the book. For instance they leave out when Brom and Eragon go off to different places in order to find more information about the Razac—specifically how to locate and kill them.

Differences between the movie and book:

Araya (played by Sienna Guillory) was portrayed with long red hair in the movie, but the book says her long hair is black.
In the book when he had reached the Varden Eragon had to go through the examination where the Twins entered his mind and probed through it looking into his thoughts and checking out his intentions. In the movie it just shows that he goes right Ajihad.

Summary: Victoria's back! But she's not alone. She's creating an army of newborns to destroy to the one thing that keeps Edward alive! Bella Swan. But how will the Cullen's survive a battle of an army of new born vampires!? Unfortunately for them, they get the help from a pack of werewolves! But will hatred get someone killed? Will Bella have second thoughts about Edward and Jacob?

Why I watched this movie:
I watched this movie because I LOVE the book series and the movies! So of course, I had to see the next one!

Likes:

At first I wasn't sure how I was going to react to the new Victoria but I liked her! It took a few scenes to get used to, but I think she did just as good a job as Rachelle Lefevre would have. (Maybe even better?)
I liked the scene when Anna Kendrick (Jessica) told her speech as valedictorian! Though I don't know why SHE was chosen to be valedictorian as I didn't think she was that good a student from the books. But it was sweet and perfect!
I liked Riley Biers! He's hot and did a good job on his role! I wish he didn't die and would be in Breaking Dawn.
Jasper's' back story was really interesting. It makes me like him more because of it!
I adored the scene with Edward, Jacob, and Bella in the tent! “Lets face it, I am hotter than you!” The whole thing was humorous, personal, and intense!
“Dad! I'm a virgin!” Favorite line in the whole film! Hehe! The scene had me laughing so hard I couldn't breathe! Charlie's reaction? Priceless.
I thought it was funny that Edward bought a bed, just for Bella to “sleep on” … nothing else? Hmm...

Dislikes:

I thought the makeup for the vampires looked weird. And Jasper's wig made him look ridiculous. I don't know why, but their faces just annoyed me.
I thought it was awkward that a bunch of vampires just started walking out of the water…
I absolutely HATED the engagement ring the Edward had given to Bella! It could have not been any uglier. It was bulgy (butt ugly)!
Edward had BIG side burns in this movie. They were distracting and I just wanted to shave them off!
Jacob is still WAY too pushy. He claims that Bella feels something for him, but she doesn't. Even though she admits it, she is basically forced to admit it so Jacob won't kill himself.

Last minute thoughts:
I am officially confused! I have no clue if I'm team Edward, or Jacob! So at the moment, I am ... Team Switzerland! *cheerful applause* But I've decided that I can't stay “Team Switzerland” forever so I will decide after I see Breaking Dawn! I can't wait!!!!

Summary: Deathly Hallows Part 1 of 2 is the beginning of the end. Harry’s without his support group of older wizards, his mentors and friends and allies, either dead or scattered. Voldemort’s influence is steadily gaining momentum as the wizarding community struggles to fight back. Harry knows what he must do – find and destroy Voldemort’s horcruxes – but getting started is the tricky part. How exactly is he suppose to find them?

Why I watched this movie:

Harry Potter fan. Enough said. Right? Check out my Fleur Delacour costume photos!

Likes:

I’ll come right out and admit that I like the movie way better than the book. There are notable differences between the two… for one I can better follow what is happening in the movie than in the book… reading the book I was clueless as to why they had to wander the freaking forest forever. In the movie? Got it – Ron got seriously hurt and only partially healed.
Dobby and Kreacher, but especially Dobby. They were too funny. It’s too bad they took out all of his parts in the previous movies and gave them to other characters (Neville primarily). It makes his death anticlimactic. It’s not sad like it should be.
The Harry and Hermione time spent alone in the tent. I’m a H/Hr fan but that scene, especially them dancing, really nails it home that they’re friends not love interests.
Visuals = awesome! That whole animated scene with the Deathly Hallows? So cool and very pretty.

Dislikes:

There were inconsistencies… why use polyjuice and then have all the Harry Potters show up at the Weasleys? The real Harry was supposed to go to Nymphadora’s parents’ house.
POTTER WATCH? HELLO!!! I actually liked that from the book.
The horcrux snatch at the ministry was suppose to include rescuing several witches and wizards, not just one witch. I feel like that diminishes some of Harry’s legend. Perhaps this decision lead to Potter Watch not happening too.
The taboo on Voldemort's name is seen but not acknowledged or explained in any way for viewers who haven’t read the books. Harry’s suppose to break it too when the snatchers catch up to them.

Last Minute Thoughts: My appetite’s whetted…. I want Part 2! Can you believe there’s only one more left? What on earth are we going to do with ourselves?
