Title: Eragon
Director: Steen Fagmeier
Duration: 104 minutes
Rated: PG

Summary: Eragon (played by Ed Speleers) sucks at hunting and one day when he’s out trying to hunt a deer he comes across a blue stone. But when it hatches Eragon is flabbergasted to meet Sapphira (voice by Rachel Weisz) who is a dragon. She’s the one who chose Eragon to be her Rider. Is it a mistake to make such a pathetic boy the last of the Dragon Riders? I think not!

Why I watched this movie:

Because I recently finished reading Eragon.

Likes:

  • I really liked Brom because he was willing to train Eragon when he didn’t have to do so. He was also very wise all that he did and he risked his life to save Eragon from getting pierced through the chest by Durza (an evil Shade). Jeremy Irons was the perfect choice for Brom and a good actor.
  • I also liked the way they did the special effects throughout the movie with spell casting, battles, and Sapphira. She looked real and not like she was C.G.I. She matched the world they built.

Dislikes:

  • I didn’t like the fact that Brom dies in the movie while trying to protect Eragon. It’s too sad.
  • I didn’t like that quite a bit of stuff was cut out of the movie, that was in the book. For instance they leave out when Brom and Eragon go off to different places in order to find more information about the Razac—specifically how to locate and kill them.

Differences between the movie and book:

  • Araya (played by Sienna Guillory) was portrayed with long red hair in the movie, but the book says her long hair is black.
  • In the book when he had reached the Varden Eragon had to go through the examination where the Twins entered his mind and probed through it looking into his thoughts and checking out his intentions. In the movie it just shows that he goes right Ajihad.

Title: The Spiderwick Chronicles

Summary: The Grace children move with their mom into their crazy aunt's house after their parent's split up. Jared is embittered and blames his mom for the split. All he wants to do is be with his dad and can't wait until he shows up and takes him away. When unimaginable and unthinkable things begin to happen, Jared is blamed for them. How can he prove his innocence when what's causing all the problems is so fantastical and so invisible?

Why I watched this movie:

I saw this movie  after reading the original five Spiderwick Chronicles.

Likes:

  • One of the best things about this movie is the fact that it combined all the novels into one movie. The books are exceptionally short and hardly made a book let alone a movie.
  • I think Freddie Highmore who plays both Jared and Simon is absolutely adorable! His acting is incredible. I actually thought he was twins until I looked up the specifics.
  • Mary-Louise Parker who played the mom, Helen Grace, did a great job too. She looked and acted every bit the exasperated, exhausted, and sad mother. Parker truly fleshes out the character from book to onscreen.
  • Hogsqueal. Loved him!

Dislikes:

  • They changed a lot and I mean a lot of things from the books to the movies. Everything from how the griffin becomes part of the family to Helen seeing and battling goblins in the house and all in between.
  • The CGI is weaker than I'd like it to be especially with Thimbletack.
  • There are several continuity errors that the discerning eye and ear can make out while watching.

Summary: Greg Heffley is just starting middle schoo. His main goal is life is to be popular by the end of the year. How is he going to do this you ask? Well, he has that all worked out. He's defiantly more popular than his best friends Rowley. Or so he thought. In the struggle to survive middle school and be “top dog” Greg looses his best friend, gets beat up by a girl and … well, maybe I shouldn't say. Watch the movie to finds out if everything falls apart for Greg or if by some miracle he can make everything better. (And for once you get to read someone's “diary” and not feel guilty!)

Why I watched this movie:

I watched this movie because it looked good and I read all the books.

Likes:

  • I liked how Greg tries to act so cool and fails, but Rowley just acts like himself and gets friends and attention. The lesson here is to not put on airs and to just chill and be yourself.
  • I like how the movie wasn't a cartoon and also how they showed pages in Greg's journal. It was an nice way to combine real life with the illustrations from the book.

Dislikes:

  • Some of the jokes in this movie were … stupid and sort of annoying. e.g.: “She's a girl, where do I grab her?”
  • Manny's (Greg's little brother) toilet was GROSS! Especially at the kitchen table. Yuck! Potty humor in the most literal sense.
  • The movie was slow moving and could have been a little shorter and more concise.
  • Fregly … Ugh! I vomit just at the thought of it. When Greg was sleeping over at Fregly's house and he chased him around with a *barf* booger and then... oh, I can't go on. Watch the movie to find out.

Last minute thoughts: This was more of a guy movie than a girl movie. My friend's little brother enjoyed every minute of it.

Summary: Harry's 6th year of Hogwarts begins with Harry noticing something suspicious about Draco Malfoy. At school, Harry discovers he can take potions under a new professor and finds a copy of the required potions textbook owned by a former student. The Half-Blood Prince has scribbled all over the book rewriting much of the instructions. When Harry follows the Prince's instructions, he discovers he makes potions better and faster. After school hours, Dumbledore is showing Harry more about Voldemort's life in an attempt to discover Voldemort's plans.

Why I watched this movie:

I watched this movie because we just got it as a DVD.  I can't wait til movie seven is out!

Likes:

  • The acting in general by everyone is great! I thought everyone did a superb job! They couldn't have picked a better Professor Slughorn. Actually, I think they've cast everyone perfectly so far throughout the series.
  • There was so much humor in this movie. I loved it and it makes me laugh. Luna and Ron were the source of most amusement. Slughorn too.
  • I like the scene where after Ron had won the Quidditch game, Hermoine was sad and furious at him and shot birds at his head. Poor Hermione. Don't worry you and Ron will get together eventually.
  • Lavender was so funny. Poor Ron and his chapped lips.
  • I enjoyed watching the flashbacks of Voldemort's life. I wish there'd been more than the two they used.

Dislikes:

  • Draco Malfoy looked weird to me in this movie. I think it's his hair. I liked how it was before.
  • I wish that they had Dobby and Kreacher in this movie. They keep excluding Dobby from the movies which is very sad because they probably won't show him and what he does in book seven. Dobby was a good friend to Harry.
  • I wanted to see a Defense Against the Dark Arts class with Snape teaching it. Do disappointed it wasn't in the theatrical release.
  • I also wished that they explained more about who the Half-Blood prince was, there was just enough to get it but not enough to deliver a huge impact.

Last minute thoughts: This was one of my favorite movies and I can't wait for it Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows to com out!

Why I watched this movie:

As mentioned in past posts I'm rereading and rewatching the Harry Potter books and movies.

Likes:

  • I thought the actress for Dolorous Umbridge (Rachel Atkins) was perfect! She was just as I imagined!
  • I also liked the actress for Luna Lovegood (Evanna Lynch) she did a great job in her role.
  • I liked the sequence of scene where Harry and the other students are practicing spells in the Room of Requirement. I thought it was fun and exciting. Filch was hilarious.

Dislikes:

  • I heard that Daniel Radcliffe was doing another movie before this one and he had to have his hair cut for it. That was, in my opinion, a terrible decision. His hair looked so much better in Goblet of the Fire then it does in this one.
  • Cornelius Fudge was oblivious to everyone who was trying to tell him that Lord Voldemort has returned. He had to see it to believe it and that is dangerous indeed when we're talking about Voldemort.

Last minute thoughts: I heard that they were making Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows into two movies even though Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix is the longest book. I think that if they're going to make any movie into two it should be this one. They're going to have to add a lot more if Harry Potter 7's gonna be two movies . Don't you think?

Why I watched this movie:

I watched this movie because my eldest sister is a huge Disney fan, especially the princess movies. I wanted to see it too. So we all decided to go see it the weekend it came out.

Likes:

  • I love the songs in this movie. They were catchy, cheerful (even the wicked ones sounded very upbeat), and wonderfully animated.I really enjoyed listening to them. The jazz music was a real hit too.
  • I think it was funny when Tiana and Prince Naveen were trying to catch a fly and they ended up in a ball with their tongues tied together. Haha!
  • I enjoyed watching Tiana on the screen. Her personality and her motivation were great! She was very beautiful too.
  • Ray (the firefly) was awesome! He was so funny (bad teeth and all) and very helpful.

Dislikes:

  • Charlotte was not a very well drawn character. Her face looked squished together and I think it was weird that she let Tiana and Prince Naveen get married when we know from the beginning that she was spoiled beyond belief and wanted to marry a prince.

Last minute thoughts: This was Disney's first African American princess movie and I thought it was great! I also think that they should make more hand drawn animated movies with music numbers. You can't go wrong with the classics!

Summary: Harry Potter's 4th year of Hogwarts begins with his name being picked out of the Goblet of Fire even though he knows he didn't enter. Without proof that he didn't put his name in the cup he is forced to compete. The Triwizard Tournament according to Sirius Black has a history of people dying. In a competition where victory means eternal glory all Harry Potter wants is to get out alive.

Why I watched this movie:

I just finished the book, and I decided to watch the movie so I could compare the movie while everything was fresh in my mind!

Likes:

  • Brendan Gleeson was great and played a very convincing job as Mad-Eye Moody. It's pretty tough to play that part!
  • How the shadows formed around Voldemort and clothed him. Ralph Fiennes is a great Voldemort!
  • The entrances of the foreign wizarding schools were very well done. Loved it and the music which sets up the perfect tone!
  • Moaning Myrtle sneaking up on poor Harry in the bathroom while he tries to figure out the egg.
  • The boys' hair! Everyone looked amazing from Fred and George, Ron, Harry. The shaggy Beatles look is perfect for them!
  • The Hungarian Horntail is so wicked cool. The chase is inaccurate to the books, but I loved it anyway. Poor beasty falling into the canyon! There can't be that many dragons left in the world.
  • Rita Skeeter! Absolutely perfect. Her comedic timing still has me in stitches.

Dislikes:

  • Mad-Eye Moody's eyeball and patch is so weird. It doesn't look at all like how it's described in the books.
  • I wish there was more of Sirius in the film. This is a book where he really shines as a godfather and he doesn't have any real scenes with Harry. I don't count the grate fire, even if it looked cool.

Why I watched this movie:

I saw this movie because I'm reading and watching all the Harry Potter books and movies again.

Likes:

  • I like how Hermione's time-turner looked and how it worked visually, actually showing time moving backwards and what happened as they went. It's a little different than how the book describes it but I found it really cool and very neat.
  • The Monster Book of Monster was Hilarious!  Yes, with a capital H. It was so good when Harry was fighting with the book and finally squished it at the Leaky Cauldron. Oh and also when it nearly ate Neville Longbottom!
  • I liked Buckbeak. Just the thought of an eagle and a horse mixed is fun to me!

Dislikes:

  • If you didn't know the Dumbledore in this movie was a new one and the old one (Richard Harris) died. From here on out Michael Gambon plays Dumbledore. Personally, I liked the old one better than the one in this movie. It's too bad that he died.
  • Professor Lupin looks terrible as a werewolf! Not even close to looking realistic or scary, which is a shame because they did the Dementors so well. The werewolf pack in New Moon was better.
  • The more the wardrobe people change Emma Watson's hair the more she looks like herself and less like Hermoine. This movie is the first time they did it. Supposedly it takes a whole bottle of Sleekeazy's Hair Potion and too much effort to get her hair to look like that!

Title: How to Train Your Dragon

Summary: Hiccup is as useless as a guitar without any strings. All he wants to do is be like everyone else in his Viking village and kill dragons. When he finally catches a dragon and a Night Fury no less nobody believes him. Not even his dad, the Chief! Determined to prove he's not telling falsehoods, Hiccup rushes out to find his felled dragon, kill it and bring it back. Only he discovers he can't kill the dragon. In secret he tries to befriend and train Toothless (the name he gave the Night Fury) to fly. During this time he realizes that dragons are nothing like everyone says they are and they're just defending themselves from the Vikings and the Giant Dragon of Doom.

Why I watched this movie:

I read the book How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell and went with my family to see the movie.

Likes:

  • I liked how Hiccup didn't expect anything major to happen with Toothless and how he just wanted to help the dragon he'd wounded.
  • I loved the scenes/scenes when Hiccup was with Toothless and especially the time when Hiccup brought Toothless a fish. Haha. So gross eating raw fish! Lots of people in the theater made gagging noises, my sister included!
  • I liked the character Astrid. She wasn't in the book so when I saw the trailer for the movie I said to myself “Who is that … did I miss something when I was reading?” But I liked her in the movie, she was (to Hiccup) all that and a bag of chips if you know what I mean.
  • The animation was totally amazing. Everyone in my family exclaimed over it from the hairs on the Vikings' arms to the dragons. Especially the dragons. Very wicked cool!

It's my opinion that the movie was a lot better compared to the book. It was very different, but I liked the changes that were made.

5 Ways the Book was Different than the Movie:

    1. In the book they actually train dragons, not kill them.
    2. Because in the book everyone trained dragons Hiccup never wanted to kill them.
    3. Astrid is a completely new character created just for the movie. She rocks.
    4. In the end of the book Hiccup got swallowed by the Dragon of Doom and then got sneezed out.
    5. In the book it said that the only Viking like feature Hiccup had was his hair, and he hide that under his helmet that he always wore. In the movie he only got the helmet after his father gave it to him.

      Last minute thoughts: This whole “weird son, disappointed dad, son becomes big hero, dad becomes proud of son, happily ever” plot has happened a lot. It must be a major concern for fathers/sons. For example it's been in: Chicken Little, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and now How to Train Your Dragon. I'm not exactly saying that I don't like it, it's just that the same thing happens again and again.

      Summary: Harry is feeling abandoned as he hasn't heard from any of his friends since the beginning of the summer. When an odd little creature appears out of thin air and tells Harry he can not come back to school Harry is very stubborn about going. It's a matter of outwitting a determined House Elf to get to school! A flying car, almost getting run over by the school train, and getting beaten by a tree is just the beginning of Harry's problems at Hogwarts as a mysterious voice whispers through the walls, “Kill... Kill... Kill...”

      Why I watched this movie:

      Because I read the book and because it is part of our Harry Potter movie marathon family night at my house.

      Likes:

      • Ron's Howler from Mrs. Weasley is AWESOME! Rupert Grint is wonderful with his expressions. He really does look like he is being scolded by an envelope.
      • In addition, Kenneth Branagh did a great job as Professor Lockhart. I never thought I would enjoy watching Lockhart on screen (he's bad enough in the book) but I did.

      Dislikes:

      • I didn't like computer rendering of Doby the House Elf. He looked so fake! As if he was made out of clay.
      • The computer graphics also bugged me when Hermione drank the Polyjuice Potion and turned into a cat. It looked ridiculously cheesy.

      Last minute thoughts: This movie is very long, but it's not as long as the first movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
