Summary:

The Curse

One tragic battle led to a 100 year old curse. Now the witches (Daughters of Light) and warlocks (Sons of Darkness) must find a way to break the curse or forfeit their powers forever.

The Struggle

Lily and Logan are sworn enemies. To be in each other’s company is strictly forbidden. This passionate pull shouldn’t be happening. Their connection shouldn’t exist. Do they break the rules to save all the spellspinners, or deny the emotions brewing between them? As they struggle, fate spins and time slips. Retreating is no longer an option. They’re breaking the rules!!!

Why I Started This Book:

I’m a huge fan of literary witches; hence my keen interest. The new active digital fiction for Kindle also spoke to my curious nature. Glad I listened when it spoke.

Likes:

• I loved the choice points in the story, and that I chose what happened next.
• Finally! An author who explored the warlock origin.
• Logan has a tattoo that only appears when his body heat rises. (Grin).
• Lily and Logan share telepathic powers and can have mental conversations. I thought that was cool!
• The author knows how to express the sense of urgency in the story, and her vivid descriptions are really great.
• It has a powerful cliffhanger ending that will leave you craving more.

Dislikes:

• I wanted more! (See cliffhanger in likes). Yes, I’m contradicting myself, but it really is a pro and a con.

Last Minute Thoughts: In a battle I managed to snatch powers off a warlock, and can now wield his powers of prediction. I’m predicting you’ll be powerless to resist this new series. The Spellspinners of Melas County will blow you away. Be forewarned, there’s a new group of magic users in the literary world. And they’re not like the others!

First Mate Keira: How did you go from writing adult romances to YA romances? When did you know you wanted to write YA?

MJP: I had a story that would fit best in YA because it’s a blend of history, adventure, and magic. It isn’t first and foremost a romance. Since I’ve read YA for years, I knew that’s where Tory’s story belongs.

First Mate Keira: Dark Mirror sounds like the antithesis to Harry Potter. Magic isn’t revered, it’s despised. You don’t go to school to learn it and get better at using it, you go to a reform school to learn how not to use magic. How did the idea first come to you?

MJP: I’m not really sure, but I have a contrarian streak. I look at a usual structure and immediately want to turn it upside down. Come to think of it, that’s exactly what I did with the first romance I ever wrote.

First Mate Keira: What would you do if you could do magic? What would be the best/worst part of having such a gift?

MJP: Magic sounds like it would be a really cool gift, and indeed, it would be lovely to be able travel anywhere in a finger snap, or assure that the weather would be perfect for a party. But there would be a high moral cost, since I’m sure there would be a temptation to use it in selfish and possible destructive ways. And there would be a social cost, as well, since having magic would make one feel strange and horribly different, and perhaps even frightened of being revealed. And that fear of being different is probably at its height in the teen years, which may be why YA readers tend to identify with those who feel different.

First Mate Keira: Describe your first kiss. Did it live up to expectations?

MJP: LOL! Has any first kiss ever done so?

First Mate Keira: What’s next for the Dark Passage series?

MJP: The second book, Dark Passage, which will be out in September 2011, sends Tory and her friends to France. I’m not sure about the third book. I’m debating two quite different plot directions.

Q: How do you know if you're writing for young adults?

Is the book you're writing a YA, or could the story be told better in an adult novel? Here are three ways to know, according to Bonnie Hearn Hill. Bonnie has helped many writers break into print. Ask her a question, and her favorite one will win a copy of Aries Rising.

1. Is your protagonist a teen?
2. Have you read YA novels, and are you comfortable with the language and pacing of teen books?
3. Do you have a high-concept idea, something that might lend itself to a series?

If so, start researching these books--how many words they contain, what topics have been done and overdone.

Q: What inspired you to write the Star Crossed Series?

Bonnie: An interest in astrology along with her close friendship with Cosmo Magazine Astrologer Hazel Dixon-Cooper inspired the Star Crossed series: Aries Rising, Taurus Eyes, and Gemini Night.

Q: What’s your sign?

Bonnie: I’m a double Gemini, saved by an Aquarius Moon. Air and Fire with very little Earth.
