Summary: Pyrotechnics and magic do not mix. They combust! Big huge explosions! The kind that get you an order of exile. But without his locus magicalicus Conn can’t communicate with the magic without literally fireworks. Nevery warns him that his experimentation will blow up in his face, but Conn doesn’t listen. There’s an evil spreading terror by turning people into stone within the city and Conn just knows that the magic knows what’s going on if only he could understand.

Why I started this book:

Because I enjoyed the first Magic Thief book so much and I wanted to read the next one.

Likes:

I like the idea of magic as a living being with magic spells being part of its inherent language. That’s pretty unique.
This story really enlarges Conn’s character. He grows up and faces tough situations and makes equally tough decisions.
Love Benet and his concern for the boy. He’s a good mediator between Conn and Nevery.
Love Greg Steinbruner as the narrator now that I’m used to him.

Dislikes:

One of the bad guys commits suicide. A little too easy to get rid of him in that way but was written in a believable manner so the complaint is a small one.

Last Minute Thoughts: What does Wellmet’s magical being think of this evil magical being? I guess I'll find out soon!

Summary: Thirteen year old Artemis is in need of fairy help! His big plan to increase the Fowl’s finances with stolen fairy technology backfires in a really bad way. Bulter is (mostly) dead and Artemis has to find a way to save him, recover the twice stolen technology and the only way to do it is get fairy help. Their help comes at a very steep price; Artemis and his crew must sacrifice all knowledge of fairies and anything related to fairies that might trigger their memory later.

Why I Started This Book:

I finished listening to book two at three in the morning. The next day I went out to the library as soon as it opened to get the next in the series. I tried to get four at the same time but had to put it on hold as it was unavailable at the time.

Likes:

Foaly, Artemis, and Jon Spiro are all very smart and are presented as thinking individuals. Granted, Spiro has to make mistakes; all bad guys do and he is eventually caught due to increasing surety and arrogance of his position as top dog.
Mulch Diggums returns again! He’s really growing on me, farting and all. I loved his Oscar stealing crime spree, very funny.
The ending. Artemis proves once again just how clever a sucker he really is by outsmarting the fairies once more.

Dislikes:

What happened to Bulter, poor dutiful Butler! I wonder if that’ll get fixed somehow in the next book.

Summary: Artemis Fowl is a criminal mastermind with a few parental issues. His father is missing and presumed dead. His mother has reverted to a childlike state to cope and never leaves her room in Fowl Manor. Artemis Fowl is determined to bring the Fowl Estate back to its former glory and he’s going to do that by doing what no other human has ever succeeded at doing… he’s going to extort the fairy people!

Why I Started This Book:

I began this book series because I heard an awful lot about it. One friend described it as getting a Harry Potter fix and since I was in desperate need of that I went to the library’s young adult section to find it. I decided on the audio format because I had an opportunity to listen for several hours on a road trip.

Likes:

Eoin Colfer is extremely clever when it comes to world building. I quite liked his use of current myths like a leprechaun and turning it into Lower Elements Police reconnaissance or more commonly LEP-recon, the fairy police force.
Nathaniel Parker is an amazing reader. He is so good with voices and acting that the story fairly leaps out of the speakers and starts materializing in front of you. He is as good as Jim Dale in my opinion.

Dislikes:

I don’t know if I’d call it an out and out dislike but there’s a lot of body humor in the book. Girls will probably find the flatulence-emitting dwarf a bit over the top as I did. However in Mulch Diggums’ defense he does bring a lot of humor to the story.

Last minute thoughts: Artemis Fowl is similar to Harry Potter in its setup. The first book places young Artemis at age eleven. In the next he’s age twelve and so on.

Summary: The aliens are returning… well they’re demons now, but that’s beside the point. The magic that held them apart from the world for 10,000 years is deteriorating and the time/dimension jumping demons are starting to make their presence known and Level 8 is going to fix it. Level 8 is the fairy’s version of MI6 and Foaly is their new ‘Quartermaster.’ Recruiting Holly Short, Mulch Diggums, and Artemis Fowl to help, they’re in a race against time itself to save the world.

Why I Started This Book:

By this point it should be pretty obvious that I like the Artemis Fowl series and listening to Nathaniel Parker. I got this audio book from the library and listened to it instead of radio while working. My likes and dislikes are going to include some biggish spoilers so beware.

Likes:

Artemis gets fairy magic in this book. Now he’s like Superhuman and it’s pretty cool when and how he got it in the time travel tunnel.
I’m a huge fan of Artemis/Holly as a potential love interest so when the time and dimensional travel ended and they each had one eye switched with out with the other I was going “Woohoo!”
Nathaniel’s voice for #1 the mage imp is very well done. He comes across like a kid but he isn’t squeaky or weird sounding.

Dislikes:

Minerva, who is the young female version of Artemis. I can’t really explain why I dislike her. Maybe it’s because she represents potential trouble to my hoped for Arty/Holly pairing. Maybe it’s because she’s so cold or maybe because I don’t like thinking that a 12 year old girl can be that creepy. I was not a fan of her.
It’s amazing how many different things were going on in this book. It’s not really a bad thing, just some of it is hard to follow when listening. You really have to pay attention in this one and perhaps even skip back a track or two to listen again.

Summary: Percy doesn’t know who he is, all he knows is that these Gorgons he’s fighting don’t stay dead. Saving an old crone, who turns out to be Juno, he makes it to the Roman camp. He makes two friends right away – Hazel, a twice alive gal who’s father is Pluto which gives her some pretty unique abilities – and Franz who’s life rests on the safety of a regular stick of firewood. The three of them are given a quest and the camp and world rely on them to not fail. No pressure.

Why I started this book:

I like the series Heroes of Olympus. I want more!

Likes:

Camp Jupiter and its setup. I liked the capture the flag War Games.
Rick Riordan’s love for his source material shows through and makes the story super rich and full of depth.
Rainbow power! Hehe.
Death using an iPad to track souls. Bwuahahaha!

Dislikes:

A worldbuilding rule was broken... As Rick explains you need a god and a demigod to kill a giant.... so which god helped Frank and Hazel kill their giant in Canada?
CLIFF HANGER OF DOOOOOOMMMMMM! lol

Summary: Connwaer is a thief. He’s lived for a very long time on the streets of Twilight, avoiding his evil uncle, for all intents and purposes, an orphan. One night he pickpockets a locus magicalicus surprising the wizard who owned it for he should have dropped dead on contact. Nevery Flinglas finds the boy interesting and takes the boy on as his apprentice. The only glitch is that Conn needs a locus stone of his own or he can’t learn magic. But learning magic is almost the least of Conn’s worries because it seems even if he does find his stone, chances are he won’t be able to use it because something or someone is stealing the magic right out of Wellmet.

Why I started this book:

I can’t exactly recall what drew me to this book. I either saw it on my library’s website or on Goodreads under the recommendation section. No matter! I saw it and got it and read it in that order.

Likes:

Conn!!! He’s awesome! There should be more thief YA books!
Benet’s rapport with Connwaer. It’s cute, but real. Conn is like the annoying younger brother. Benet is a quiet cornerstone.
Conn knows what he’s willing and capable of doing or learning and what he isn’t and sticks to that with consistency. It’s refreshing. I liked that he wasn’t willing to be a servant and when it seemed that was his only option he was willing to walk away despite all the positives of staying.

Toss-Up:

Greg Steinbruner’s way of reading took some getting used to. I can’t tell if it’s his natural way of reading or perhaps how he decided or was directed to act. The accent for the speech in Wellmet could be entirely made up and thus explain why it was so weird. I got used to it eventually. Even grew to like it.

Dislike:

When Conn is kept by the city’s police in a cell and feed him tons and tons of truth potion to get him to talk. Good thing Nevery is on his side or the poor kid could have been killed by “neglect”.

Summary: Percy Jackson is your average kid, except as he’s about to find out, he’s the son of a Greek god. This would explain his dyslexia and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). It’s a sign of his heritage. All offspring of the gods are marked by it, their natural language being ancient Greek. If finding out he’s a demigod isn’t strange enough, Percy discovers he’s been setup to take the blame of stealing Zeus’ master lightning bolt. The only way to prove his innocence is to go on a quest and retrieve it. The odds don’t look so good for Percy.

Why I Started This Book:

I’ve been seeing the title of this book in many places and decided what better way to be introduced to it officially than by audio cd? I knew nothing going into the book.

Likes:

Percy is average. His learning disabilities apply to the English language but come in handy in other ways.
If you want a way to learn about Greek mythology that’s fun and easy to understand, Percy Jackson and his quest to discover the lightning thief, is a good way to go. No need to remember the “uses.”
The Greek gods will exist as long as Western culture exists. They are not meant to be metaphysical God. They are simply humanlike immortals.
Jesse Bernstein, the reader, sounds exactly like how I imagine a 12 year old boy like to sound. He has excellent kid voices.

Dislikes:

I’m coming from finishing Artemis Fowl, boy genius, and I can’t help but cringe at some of the inane questions/comments/concerns Percy brings up.
I am definitely too old to enjoy this book fully. This series is designed to teach children about the Greek mythology which I already know quite a bit about having learned about them in high school. It really struck a nerve when Percy had a semester if not a year in real school studying the myths and he didn't recognize Medusa when he stumbled upon her statue warehouse! Grr…
I was able to figure out the Oracle’s prophecy within a chapter of having heard it. I had two ideas and the first was right.
The only voice Jesse Bernstein narrated that gave me any pause was his voice for Zeus. It was very weird. I was not a fan.

Summary: September is twelve years old when she is whisked off to Fairyland on the back of a spotted leopard. Her adventures there reflect tales like The Phantom Tollboth and Alice in Wonderland. Will she make it out in one piece or will she lose herself there?

Why I started this book:

I saw much being made of it in the blogosphere and had to check it out from my library. Cool idea!

Likes:

I like that September chooses the path through fairyland that causes her to lose her heart, but in fact gains one along the way as she comes to care for different members of the world.
I like the Wyverary – a creature that’s part wvyern and part library. His mother was a wvyern and his father the library. The Wyverary’s name is AL (short for A to L... which incidentally is all the Wyverary knows, anything that doesn’t start with a letter between A and L is lost to him.)
I really like the Marquess and how that plays out. I was expecting the Marquess to be September or something crazy for 90% of the novel, but right before the big reveal I caught on to what was really going on behind the scenes. Good job!
The bicycles!!!

Dislikes:

I’m not big on the repetitive phrasing that children are heartless, I do get why it’s in the novel over and over, but it still grated me every time I heard it.
Also there are one or two things that I felt were a little too too out there – in particular and most notably the reference to September eating the fish she catches – raw, bloody, gory... and also the part where September faces death (creepy much?) to get a weapon unlike any other in fairyland.

Last Minute Thoughts: It ends with the idea that there could be sequels in the works which should be interesting. If you like Victorian (Gothic!!) fantasy you will like this book. I highly recommend it as an audio book. The author made a great narrator.

Summary: Opal Koboi, an unconscious pixie and archenemy of the fairies is about to make her great escape. When she comes out of her self-induced coma, Opal will set her plans for revenge into action. Why I Started This Book:

I’m on a roll – I want to know how this series develops and eventually ends.

Likes:

Nathaniel Parker keeps amazing me. I listen to him for hours. He’s fabulous as a reader. I plan on finding more books that he’s read and listening to them also.
Eoin Colfer is hilarious. He keeps making things up around dwarves and Mulch. Love his world; especially the lower elements.
Opal’s cloning and escape from her psychiatric ward. Can you steal your own identity?
How 14 year old Artemis Fowl ends up discovering Opal’s super awesome hidden ship of doom with a very low tech approach. Pretty dang cool if I do say so.
Finally, Opal’s poor misguided idea of becoming human and how it winds up backfiring on her. Tehe.

Dislikes:

The books are getting darker. This one was particularly gruesome with details on cracking ribs, breaking bones, groans of pain, stinky trolls, etc. Just because fairies heal easily doesn’t mean I want to hear about multiple broken bodies.
Root’s death. Sniff. Of course without it and Opal’s machinations the story would not have started.
Foaly was not as smart or as innovative as he has been in the previous books.
Lastly, I didn’t like how Artemis and Butler regained their memories. I thought the mirrored lenses would have provided something more than a barely there ability to lie under the fairy gaze.

Summary: Artemis’ mother is sick and fairy magic just makes it worse. There’s only one cure and it’s extinct due to actions of a young Artemis. Time travel is the only way to save his mother. Blackmail and fear hyping gets Artemis the chance he needs and now as the paradox unravels around his ears, Artemis has to outwit several bad guys and one truly exceptional mastermind... himself.

Why I Started This Book:

I started this audio book because it’s the last of the Artemis Fowl books to date. I didn’t realize until after I picked it up and started playing it that it was narrated by a different reader. I wonder why they did that? Reitel is not a bad reader, he’s just not capable of replicating Parker’s voices. Parker read for five books. Why did he not read this one? It doesn’t make sense to me. Jim Dale read all of the Potter books, it just seems obvious to continue with the same reader in a series.

Likes:

“Right now his future was escaping with his past.”
Enn Reitel does a pretty good job with young and adult Artemis voices. You can hear the difference and it took me a while to realize it was another narrator to begin with when I first started the story.
Holly kissed Artemis! Woo!
This adventure leads young Artemis Fowl to the start of the series... on the hunt for fairies and a way to make up the Fowl financial losses.

Dislikes:

Artemis Fowl’s mother sickness and the dwelling of it and devotion of a lot of pages to it. I hate reading about sickness, even worse is listening to it. The less said the better.
Enn Reitel’s Foaly is nasal. Sooo weird after 5 novels without it. Bulter’s voice is like a slow person and it’s a bit off putting because Bulter is smart.
Opal is a sulky whiney misfit. Honestly, I can’t stand her!

Last minute thoughts: Artemis Fowl’s mother retains her memories. I’m kind of indifferent to it. She now knows about fairies and magic and that Artemis has been messing around. She forces Artemis to be completely honest with her about what he’s been up to.
