Summary: Pyrotechnics and magic do not mix. They combust! Big huge explosions! The kind that get you an order of exile. But without his locus magicalicus Conn can’t communicate with the magic without literally fireworks. Nevery warns him that his experimentation will blow up in his face, but Conn doesn’t listen. There’s an evil spreading terror by turning people into stone within the city and Conn just knows that the magic knows what’s going on if only he could understand.

Why I started this book:

Because I enjoyed the first Magic Thief book so much and I wanted to read the next one.

Likes:

I like the idea of magic as a living being with magic spells being part of its inherent language. That’s pretty unique.
This story really enlarges Conn’s character. He grows up and faces tough situations and makes equally tough decisions.
Love Benet and his concern for the boy. He’s a good mediator between Conn and Nevery.
Love Greg Steinbruner as the narrator now that I’m used to him.

Dislikes:

One of the bad guys commits suicide. A little too easy to get rid of him in that way but was written in a believable manner so the complaint is a small one.

Last Minute Thoughts: What does Wellmet’s magical being think of this evil magical being? I guess I'll find out soon!

Summary: Percy doesn’t know who he is, all he knows is that these Gorgons he’s fighting don’t stay dead. Saving an old crone, who turns out to be Juno, he makes it to the Roman camp. He makes two friends right away – Hazel, a twice alive gal who’s father is Pluto which gives her some pretty unique abilities – and Franz who’s life rests on the safety of a regular stick of firewood. The three of them are given a quest and the camp and world rely on them to not fail. No pressure.

Why I started this book:

I like the series Heroes of Olympus. I want more!

Likes:

Camp Jupiter and its setup. I liked the capture the flag War Games.
Rick Riordan’s love for his source material shows through and makes the story super rich and full of depth.
Rainbow power! Hehe.
Death using an iPad to track souls. Bwuahahaha!

Dislikes:

A worldbuilding rule was broken... As Rick explains you need a god and a demigod to kill a giant.... so which god helped Frank and Hazel kill their giant in Canada?
CLIFF HANGER OF DOOOOOOMMMMMM! lol

Summary: Connwaer is a thief. He’s lived for a very long time on the streets of Twilight, avoiding his evil uncle, for all intents and purposes, an orphan. One night he pickpockets a locus magicalicus surprising the wizard who owned it for he should have dropped dead on contact. Nevery Flinglas finds the boy interesting and takes the boy on as his apprentice. The only glitch is that Conn needs a locus stone of his own or he can’t learn magic. But learning magic is almost the least of Conn’s worries because it seems even if he does find his stone, chances are he won’t be able to use it because something or someone is stealing the magic right out of Wellmet.

Why I started this book:

I can’t exactly recall what drew me to this book. I either saw it on my library’s website or on Goodreads under the recommendation section. No matter! I saw it and got it and read it in that order.

Likes:

Conn!!! He’s awesome! There should be more thief YA books!
Benet’s rapport with Connwaer. It’s cute, but real. Conn is like the annoying younger brother. Benet is a quiet cornerstone.
Conn knows what he’s willing and capable of doing or learning and what he isn’t and sticks to that with consistency. It’s refreshing. I liked that he wasn’t willing to be a servant and when it seemed that was his only option he was willing to walk away despite all the positives of staying.

Toss-Up:

Greg Steinbruner’s way of reading took some getting used to. I can’t tell if it’s his natural way of reading or perhaps how he decided or was directed to act. The accent for the speech in Wellmet could be entirely made up and thus explain why it was so weird. I got used to it eventually. Even grew to like it.

Dislike:

When Conn is kept by the city’s police in a cell and feed him tons and tons of truth potion to get him to talk. Good thing Nevery is on his side or the poor kid could have been killed by “neglect”.

Summary: A group of kids tried out and landed jobs as Disney’s Magic Kingdom virtual hosts. Little did they know that they were selected for something far greater – saving Disney from takeover by its own villains. They can see what’s going on because of the cutting edge technology used to transform them into holograms. When they go to sleep they become part of both the real world and the animated world. Their only clue to stop what’s going on is a legend Walt Disney gave to the Imagineers.

Why I started this book:

Because I love Disney! This promised to be a great series and that’s even better!

Likes:

The plot of this story is great. The whole series sounded like it would be fun and action packed and very unique.

Dislikes:

I felt dropped into a story already well started. The explanations were missing or too short. I often wondered about what was really going on as I read.
The writing was choppy and rushed.
The characters were extremely underdeveloped. I didn’t know why they were chosen as Virtual Hosts and I didn’t know much about any of them, not even the main protagonist.
The magic of Disney wasn’t captured... at least not for me.
Where were the good animations trying to help stop the villains?

Summary: When Carter and Sadie’s father, Dr. Julius Kane, accidentally destroys the Rosetta Stone and sets five Egyptian gods loose their whole life changes as secrets begin to unravel. They almost immediately come into magical powers and have to run from forces of evil. Together they have to learn how to cope, rescue their father, and save the world all with just the help from their uncle, Sadie’s cat, and a few other misfits.

Why I started this book:

I have read the Percy Jackson series by Riordan and was interested in seeing what he did next.

Likes:

Riordan combined both worlds – Kane Chronicles and Percy Jackson with a few vague references that tickled me pink. One mention was by Uncle Amos referred to the gods on the other side of Manhattan (he was looking at the Empire State Building when he said it.) The second was by Thoth and referred to Hermes.
The multicultural aspect: the interracial parents and the siblings looking different from each other with Carter being dark like their father and Sadie being light like their mother. Riordan’s definition of fairness and equality was highlighted by several Kindle users both in its original location and when he echoed it later in the novel.
The Egyptian god setup was as carefully explained by Riordan as the Greek gods in Percy Jackson. He goes over the two different sets, how they combine, and explained inconsistencies using a well thought out bit of imagination. They are Set, Osiris, Isis, Horus, and Nephthys to name the big five.
I liked the form of long distance travel – how Egyptian and Egyptian style monuments were turned into places of power and portals.
Anubis is hot!

Dislikes:

Carter was not as strong a hero as I am used to for a protagonist. It was odd for me to read again and again proof that his younger sister was stronger.
Sadie is far, far, far too young for Anubis. Twelve and boy crazy? I guess if he’s Justin Bieber.
Sadie and Carter’s grandparents. Ugh.

Summary: There are 5 kids who seem very normal, but are not even close to normal. When they were still just an egg they were injected with avian DNA in a lab so that they grew wings. They are stronger and more powerful than a regular person.

When they were in the lab one of the workers broke them out and hid them for the longest of time. He took care of them just as a dad would do, but then 4 years later he disappeared and the flock just thought that he had died. The oldest member of the group Max decided she would take care of the flock.

In the flock there are Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gazzy, and then Angel. Max, Fang, and Iggy are very close in age. Nudge is a year or two younger than the eldest, then Gazzy being the second to last of being the youngest in the flock, ending off with Angel being the youngest of them.

In the story the kids are at a camp and they are enjoying themselves then out of the blue little Angel says that Fang is going to die in the near future. Max is shocked. She and Fang have gotten very close to one another and they love each other. Max must do everything she can to make sure Fang doesn’t get killed.

Why I started this book:

I like the Maximum Ride series.

Likes:

What I really liked about this book was that there was some romance between Fang and Max. I liked how they would try to sneak away to be just with each other.
I also liked that there was a lot of suspense in the book because at the end of the book there is a part where Fang has really died and Max thought of a way to help him. I couldn’t put it down until I knew how she was going to help him!!!

Dislikes:

What I dislike the most about the book is that Angel loses faith in Max and decides to betray the flock by going and joining the bad guys side and helping them.

Summary: Kira Moore is an outcast in a future where mind-reading and telepathy are traits everyone can do... everyone except her. This makes her a zero and zeroes can’t be trusted. She hopes her mind-reading skills haven’t developed yet because she’s a late bloomer, but it’s not looking so good for her. If she stays a zero, Kira can’t be with her best friend, Raf. And even though he’s willing to risk it for a chance between the two of them, she’s not. When Kira—without meaning to do so—mindjacks Raf and controls him for a few moments and nearly kills him, she discovers being a zero is the least of her worries. In fact, Kira is not a zero at all, but a mindjacker, a hidden mutation in the gene pool, and for good reason. If anybody found out mindjackers existed they’d be sent to camps designed to keep them separated from the general populace, just like how the first readers were rounded up.

Why I started this book:

I started this book because I was offered a free copy for review.

Likes:

The worldbuilding on this is excellent! It’s a little creepy, a lot interesting, and always moving. It doesn’t slow down for a minute.
Can you imagine teachers passing lessons to you directly into your mind? Or that they’d know if you weren’t paying attention because they could read your thoughts? Wow!
If you could control people’s minds and actions by manipulating their thoughts, would you? How would you protect yourself from being controlled in return?
Kira is a strong heroine, willing to stick her neck out for the right reasons and to protect the innocent.

Dislikes:

That a key character of the story died. In doing so they were redeemed, but it’s still sad.
There wasn’t more Raf! A relationship is hinted at, but it’s not there yet. Maybe the next book?

Summary: Airel just wants to be normal but her ability to heal makes her as abnormal as one could get. The new boy at school, Michael, is as impossibly gorgeous as you can imagine and is very interested in her. Running parallel to the present is a story reaching out from the past about warriors and a Sword of Light and an epic struggle of good vs evil. Can she figure out what is going on before it’s too late?

Why I started this book:

I was contacted by the publicist and when I saw the cover I was very attracted to the book. It has a beautiful cover, well done and very pretty. The blurb sounded like a great start to a new series and so I said yes to reviewing it.

Why I Quit this book:

There was too much focus on the Arabia sections which happened in the past. They dragged, had too many characters, and pulled too much of the storytime away from the present day with Airel and Michael. In the end I couldn’t keep pushing through them. I hate skimming or skipping sections (it’s a sign the story doesn’t appeal to me) and when I started to do that I knew it was time to put the book down. If half of the back story was devoted to building Airel and Micheal's relationship it would be a much better book. That said there are a lot of positive reactions to this book, but it’s just not for me.

Summary: Percy Jackson is your average kid, except as he’s about to find out, he’s the son of a Greek god. This would explain his dyslexia and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). It’s a sign of his heritage. All offspring of the gods are marked by it, their natural language being ancient Greek. If finding out he’s a demigod isn’t strange enough, Percy discovers he’s been setup to take the blame of stealing Zeus’ master lightning bolt. The only way to prove his innocence is to go on a quest and retrieve it. The odds don’t look so good for Percy.

Why I Started This Book:

I’ve been seeing the title of this book in many places and decided what better way to be introduced to it officially than by audio cd? I knew nothing going into the book.

Likes:

Percy is average. His learning disabilities apply to the English language but come in handy in other ways.
If you want a way to learn about Greek mythology that’s fun and easy to understand, Percy Jackson and his quest to discover the lightning thief, is a good way to go. No need to remember the “uses.”
The Greek gods will exist as long as Western culture exists. They are not meant to be metaphysical God. They are simply humanlike immortals.
Jesse Bernstein, the reader, sounds exactly like how I imagine a 12 year old boy like to sound. He has excellent kid voices.

Dislikes:

I’m coming from finishing Artemis Fowl, boy genius, and I can’t help but cringe at some of the inane questions/comments/concerns Percy brings up.
I am definitely too old to enjoy this book fully. This series is designed to teach children about the Greek mythology which I already know quite a bit about having learned about them in high school. It really struck a nerve when Percy had a semester if not a year in real school studying the myths and he didn't recognize Medusa when he stumbled upon her statue warehouse! Grr…
I was able to figure out the Oracle’s prophecy within a chapter of having heard it. I had two ideas and the first was right.
The only voice Jesse Bernstein narrated that gave me any pause was his voice for Zeus. It was very weird. I was not a fan.

Why I started this book:

I loved the first book in the series, had to read this one!

Likes:

Tansy is a rebellious teen, a little cliched in her approach to get back at her dad, but then again the girl does start out %72 pathetic. I love how her first efforts to change that make it worse instead of better. She evolves into a character you can root for as the plot moves forward.
Hudson – a manly high school senior – not a joke or an oxymoron. He’s not into the high school drama, believes and works for justice, is respectful, honorable, but still a little tarnished which just makes him that much sexier in a knight’s armor.
I love how Tansy and Hudson play off each other in this book, especially when they butt heads in the beginning because of Hudson tricking her into snitching on her (ex) boyfriend.
Rumpelstiltskin storyline – wow! Awesome.

Dislikes:

Uh how stupid is the dad? All buddy-buddy with the stepson and ignoring his own daughter until she does something too outrageous and finally gets his attention coming across like a hardcase. Yet he wonders why she’s got issues? Eye roll.
The leprechaun once again didn’t appeal to me. He’s got to go and Chrissy agrees!
