Summary: 12 year old George Chapman is on a field trip with his class to the Natural History Museum in London. When he's removed from the rest of the class for something he didn't do, George escapes the museum and vents his anger on an innocent dragon statue and winds up breaking it. Unknowingly falling into a layer of unLondon, George looks up to see if anyone has noticed and finds a pterodactyl carving peeling off the side of the building. Rescued by Gunner, George learns that he set into motion things that have been precariously balanced for a long time and now he has 24 hours to make things right or become enslaved to the Stone of London and maybe even start a war.

Why I started reading this book:

I saw this trilogy first in the bookstore. Then I saw the trailer for Sorcerer’s Apprentice and the first thing I thought was that it was going to be this book series. It’s not, but the gargoyles in the trailer reminded me of the back blurb to the book. I immediately hightailed it to the library and put them on hold.

Likes:

• Gunner a is World War 1 statue who acts as protector, guide, and friend to George and Edie as they explore the many layers of unLondon.
• I liked the world-building that Charlie Fletcher did throughout the novel. There are the good statues known as Spits that are imbued with a sort of soul by their Makers. And then there are the evil Taints which are soulless carvings that are half or all beast in appearance.
• It's very cool to learn that all the statues that Fletcher mentioned can actually be found in and around London. That would make for a very interesting tour!
• Some statues (cough Dictionary cough) use very big words which might be difficult for younger readers, but Fletcher does a good job defining them in character conversation or contextually in the sentence.

Dislikes:

• I didn't like Edie as a character. She was too closed off, hardheaded, and stubborn to be very likeable.
• The Stone didn't really seem as sinister as it was made to sound. The Walker seems like the bigger enemy even though he's enslaved to the Stone and acts on its orders (some of the time).
• The Black Friar and Little Tragedy are very ambiguous. I don't know if I really like them or not because of this. I'm worried the Black Friar will do something to hurt the kids.
• The writing is a little stiff, generally speaking.

Title: The Ironwood Tree (Book 4: The Spiderwick Chronicles)
Author: Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black

Summary: At Mallory’s fencing competition, Jared spies a girl trying to break into his sister’s backpack. When corning the girl, Jared discovers that the girl is fey when she first shapeshifts into Jared’s triplet and then into a young boy. But cornering a shapeshifting fey is not a smart idea as the adults see only what they want to see which leads to Jared’s expulsion. While Simon tries to stand up for him, Mallory is tricked and kidnapped. Will the Jared and Simon be able to save their sister?

Why I Started the Book:

I wanted to finish the Spiderwick Chronicles so I grabbed the two remaining novels. There’s only five in total before the series stops following the Grace children and moves in another direction.

Likes:

• The dwarves are master metalsmiths. What they can do with metal humans can only dream of and they’re very painstaking with their efforts so that every little thing is perfect. They take much pride in their work which is their downfall.
• The metal tree underground in the dwarves’ kingdom (otherwise known as the ironwood tree) and the metal dogs. The illustrations and depictions were great.
• The Knocker that they meet underground during their escape has a feel of Gollum from Lord of the Rings, but without the whole creepy Precious aspect. Luckily, he’s helpful and can hear what stones speak.

Dislikes:

• Mulgarath’s casual genocide of the dwarves when he discovers they’ve been tricked by Jared and Simon and don’t have the Field Guide. He orders the goblins do all the killing. Afterward Mulgarath reveals that he had the guide the whole time. Why would he do that? Hopefully it’s revealed in the next book.
• When the Grace children return home they find their mother has been kidnapped and that Hogsqueal helped. Hogsqueal is now looking like a nefarious character, but he swears he had no choice that it was join or die.

Summary: After a make-out session at an after prom party with suddenly hot Bobby, Gina wakes up inside a coffin. She’s a vampire! Luckily Bobby’s there to meet her on the other side with necessities – clothes! But that’s when her luck runs out. Her first night as a vampire doesn’t go so well when they get captured and dragged to Mellisande’s secret lair filled with newborn teenagers, including her nemesis, who’s now all wrapped around Chaz, her ex-honey.

Why I started this book:

Saw it on the shelf in the library and it looked funny.

Likes:

• Gina is hilarious. She’s constantly running snarky commentary in her head or saying it out loud. She’s a heroine you can go shopping with and go out with for a bite.
• I like that she stays with chess geek Bobby even after finding hunky Chaz turned.
• It’s lighthearted and fun. Just take a look at the back blurb.
• The humor reminds me a little bit of Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Legally Blonde, which I have to say is a fun mix. (Warning: the vampire mythology is different from Buffy.)

Dislikes:

• It drags a little in the middle.
• The creepy psychic creature.
• Gina’s automatic love for Bobby is a bit strange. Why does she love him? Or for that matter why does he love her?
• Lack of world-building when it came to the Council, prophecy, vampire powers, and the medallion that tested their strength.

Summary: Ironhand takes place immediately after Stoneheart. George and Edie have approximately 9 hours to save Gunner from the Walker's clutches or he will cease to exist/live to see another day. As they struggle to complete this task, George is forced to go the Hard Way. The Walker is determined to capture and exploit the Glint and the Maker for his own gain and ultimate freedom from the Stone. He will do whatever it takes by fair means or foul.

Why I started reading this book:

It’s book number two of three in the this unLondon based trilogy.

Likes:

• The Walker's lair beneath the city of London and how Gunner manages to outwit the man and rescue himself.
• George is very clever and figures out how to save Gunner from instant and permenant termination. I liked the use of the Unknown Soldier.
• I like Spout and how George changes his Taint status into that of a Spit. Can I have a gargoyle as a pet too? I'd call her Raindrop.

Dislikes:

• Edie's kidnapping by the Walker, especially knowing how the Walker has hunted down and killed hundreds of Glints (girls and women who can read the stone) in order to steal their Heartstones. I don't like the idea of young girls being abducted and brutally murdered. We're not given a lot of specifics, but based on what Glints are capable of seeing by touching bare stone, I imagine poor Edie saw some pretty gruesome things. It seems a little too dark for the younger readers on the recommended reading levels.
• The Glint with the sewn-shut eyes. Creepy! I did not need that mental image. Shudder.

First Mate Keira: What do you enjoy most about writing?

Nancy DiFabbio: I love the freedom to capture my thoughts whenever and wherever I am—as long as I have paper and pencil, laptop or voice recorder. It’s a blessing to be able to work from home. I can take care of my horses and family; I don’t need an expensive wardrobe; and I don’t have to commute.

First Mate Keira: When did you first become interested in horses?

Nancy: I remember my brother and I sitting astride floppy stuffed animals watching cowboys and Indians racing across our little black and white TV. Of course, to us, our mounts were oversized, under-stuffed fabric dogs, they were gleaming stallions. Neither of us gave up dreaming that one day our parents would move some horses into our backyard and I still treasure the innocence that prevented us from realizing the impossibility of that fantasy. A 50’x 50’ plot in our middle class neighborhood wasn’t exactly a horse-friendly environment.

First Mate Keira: In addition to your love of horses, you have spent over 30 years as a wedding dress couturier – do you find similarities between your two passions?

Nancy: Sewing and writing are both creative enterprises that allow me to entertain, inspire and gratify others. It was a pleasure working with the sumptuous fabrics, laces and trims used in bridalwear and an honor playing a such an important role in someone’s life.

As a writer, my work also impacts people’s lives, if only momentarily. Maybe my words have done nothing more than bring a quick smile to their lips or a flash of fear when they first encounter the spirit in the painting, but it’s an honor to do that as well. I’d love to think that perhaps something I’ve written has made someone think more deeply about their own life choices, fears or passions.

First Mate Keira: As a YA author, who do you envision as your intended/target audience?

Nancy: I’m gratified—but not surprised--to learn that Midnight Magic is finding an audience among adults as well as teens. Sometimes we all need to read something that frees our imagination and leaves us pleasantly satiated, like comfort food for the soul.

That being said, I think Midnight Magic will be among the favored books of 9-12 year old girls who haven’t (hopefully)yet reached the age when they are drawn to more mature topics, i.e. sex, drugs, drinking, etc.

First Mate Keira: Do you think YA authors today have a responsibility to create appropriate content for young readers?

Nancy: Authors of tween and teen novels should remember that that their words can have a lasting impact on an adolescent’s life choices. Glorifying an abusive, controlling “bad boy” sends the message that this behavior is appropriate and desirable.

Controversial topics should certainly be addressed in YA literature but I am strongly opposed to graphic descriptions of sex or violence. Good writing can evoke strong emotions and inspire thought without resorting to this lazy fix.

Summary: As a daughter of two magicians, Igraine is expected to follow in their footsteps, casting spells and concocting potions, right? Actually, all she wants to be is a knight and have adventures. She gets her chance when Osmund the Greedy tries to take over the castle, and her parents are turned into pigs! Luckily her brother is making a potion to turn them back, but he needs one more ingredient. Will Igraine become a knight, save her parents, and beat Osmund? Or will Osmund the Greedy rule over the castle with an iron fist forever?

Why I Read This Book:

I read this book because I have enjoyed other books by Cornelia Funke and thought that I would try it. Also, that back blurb caught my attention in the library and sounded interesting.

Likes:

• I like the idea of a 12 year-old knight. She’s fighting for us pre-teens!
• I liked the magic used by Igraine’s brother and parents; it seemed unstoppable.
• So we know Igraine wants to be a knight, right? Well she would be a knight with one fear: Spiders. I thought it was hilarious that out of all the fears she could possibly have, her ONLY fear was spiders.

Dislikes:

• I found myself skimming this book to get it finished. It didn't really hold my interest and more than anything I just wanted to finish it. Some parts of the book I enjoyed, but I like to be totally captivated during the whole book, not just good parts here and there. I’d be all excited about something that happened and curious to read on, but then instead of finding more rising action it was more of a plateau and that got very dull very quickly. I think Cornelia Funke could have made this book a lot more intense by keeping the rising action strong.

Title: Lucinda's Secret (Book 3: The Spiderwick Chronicles)

Summary: Thimbletack has stolen the Field Guide (or so the Grace children believe) and they want it back. However they are not the only ones who want it --- goblins, elves, ogres want it too just to name a few. Whatever will they do?

Why I Started the Book:

This is the last of the Spiderwick books I got at the library. I will need to get more so I can continue the story. They’re still too short, but the illustrations more than make up for it.

Likes:

• The phooka – a half rabbit and monkey creature. It reminds me of the Cheshire Cat in Alice Wonderland.
• All the Little People speak in rhyme which at a quick reading can be tricky to make anything of and leave one a little confused. I like it though and think it’s part of the charm of this series.

Dislikes:

• Crazy Aunt Lucinda might not be so crazy, she’s the only adult that we know of who would believe the Grace children about the fairies because she made friends with some of them, but she certainly isn’t a character who makes a difference to the story. At least not yet.
• The kids barely escape entrapment by the elves. They want the book and they are not above holding hostages to get it. The elves are supposed to come across noble and sinister at the same time and I'm not so sure it works here.

Title: The Wrath of Mulgarath (Book 5: The Spiderwick Chronicles)
Author: Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black

Summary: In the final book the Grace children must rescue their mother. They will have to fight their way past Mulgarath’s defenses and get into his palace fortress made of garbage to do so. Without the Field Guide for clues, will they know what to do or can they do it all on their own?

Why I Started the Book:

It’s the last in the original series which I want to finish before renting the movie.

Likes:

• The dragons – where they come from, how they grow, what they can do. I don’t want to give too much away as it was pretty neat.
• Bryon, the griffin Simon rescued earlier in the series, shows tremendous loyalty to the kids. He gives them a lift to Mulgarath’s fortress at the junkyard and protects them from dragons. He’s a very handy fellow.
• Hogsqueal proves to be trustworthy, which is great. He helps get the Grace children into the junkyard and winds up being a huge help in the fight against Mulgarath.
• Timbletack the house brownie also stops being so difficult and pledges himself to the kids to help rescue their mom. It’s because of his actions Simon and Mallory escape with their lives.

Dislikes:

• A trip to the elves and a promise to return the Field Guide gives Jared a few moment’s with Arthur Spiderwick. Arthur’s help is extremely minor as he has no experience directly with dragons and warns Jared to stay away from the ogre, Mulgarath.
• Bragging as the source of Mulgarath’s downfall. It’s what ogres (and most villains) love to do best, so I get it, I just wish it wasn’t done in so obvious a manner.

Last Minute Thoughts: I found the last book to be of a better length for a children’s novel. I still would have liked them more if they were combine in one large volume or were extended and therefore larger and longer for older readers. The series is a great way to introduce young readers into fantasy. I would recommend it for 3-5^th graders and 2^nd too, most definitely if read aloud to them.

Summary: Silvertongue takes place immediately after Ironhand. George still has one more battle to fight to win his freedom from the Stone. Edie believes her mom might be alive after all. A devil from the black void of the obsidian mirrors follows them back to London, stopping time and awakening the London Stone. The Walker is gone temporarily, locked in the mirrors, but now the children have something worse to face. With two powers of darkness working together war between the Spits and Taints is unavoidable.

Why I started reading this book:

It’s book number three of three in the this unLondon based trilogy.

Likes:

• I liked finding out that the Raven isn't really supposed to be bad, but has been a servant of the Walker for a long time, bound to him by magic. Edie frees the Raven and he repays the debt by taking her through the memories of what has happened to show her more about her mom.
• Clocker was one of my favorite Weirded Ones from Stoneheart, I was glad to see his return.
• Shackleton and the Red Queen are excellent additions to the cast of Spits.
• George's battle with the Dark Knight and Night Mare is excellent and well done.

Dislikes:

• Edie Laemmel's still a bit of a nuisance as far a character goes. She's too stubborn by half and basically refuses to be a part of the group despite wanting to be there. She's my least favorite character in the trilogy.

Summary: When Simon is captured by goblins, Jared and Mallory must find a way to get him back. Thimbletack knows what to do but he’ll only rhyme and give clues. Angry, Jared attacks Thimbletack and gets the seeing stone. Suddenly all things fey come to light!

Why I Started the Book:

I got three Spiderwick novels at once so I could read them back to back. This is book number two.

Likes:

• The goblin species – part frog in appearance with wicked looking teeth that are not their own.
• Hogsqueal, the hobgoblin. His spit allows the Grace children to see the fantasy kingdom right under their nose.
• The troll in the lake. Good thing he’s not very smart or the kids would be in serious trouble.

Dislikes:

• Tibbs getting eaten. Poor cat! How gruesome!
• Thimbletack the brownie/boggart is one wicked little creature who makes a lot of mischief. I’m not sure he’ll stay as a dislike as I read more of the books, we’ll just have to wait and see what he does.
